Why Is the 2022 Ford Expedition Going in the Wrong Direction?
The Ford Expedition is a full-row midsize SUV that’s been around for decades. It has some serious staying power, as evidenced by its persistent popularity. But despite positive reviews, the 2022 Ford Expedition is facing challenges affecting sales. What’s going on with the Expedition?
2022 Ford Expedition sales are way down
The 2022 Ford Expedition is typically a best-seller, but its sales in the first quarter of 2022 are way down from where they were in the first quarter of 2021. At the end of Q1 2021, the Ford Expedition had sold 22,263 models. In contrast, by the end of Q1 2022, it had sold just 9,718. That’s 12,545 fewer SUVs than last year.
It’s worth noting that 2022 Ford Expedition sales have declined as the beginning of 2022 has progressed. In January, Ford sold 4,725 Expeditions, but in February, the automaker sold 3,076 models. And in March 2022, the company moved only 1,917 Expeditions.
Supply chain disruptions continue to hurt sales
One aspect consistently affecting motor vehicle sales right now is the pandemic. Though many factors make buying and selling vehicles challenging, ongoing supply chain problems top the list.
Auto manufacturers are experiencing parts shortages, so producing the same number of vehicles as usual is difficult. In addition, microchip shortages have led some carmakers, including Ford, to halt production altogether or stop including coveted features in specific models.
Yet there’s some hope for the automotive industry. The chip shortage is finally easing after nearly two years of problems. That means car manufacturers are increasingly able to produce their typical number of vehicles with all the necessary parts.
Another SUV might be taking a slice of the 2022 Ford Explorer sales
Another factor might be hurting the 2022 Ford Expedition sales: the debut of the new-to-market 2022 Jeep Wagoneer and its luxury sibling, the Grand Wagoneer. These two additions to the large SUV segment and large luxury segment present an interesting problem for other full-size SUVs.
The 2022 Jeep Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer are updated versions of a favorite throwback. Though the Wagoneer isn’t exactly stealing all of the Expedition’s sales, it’s taking a respectable piece. The Wagoneer sold 7,056 units in the first quarter of 2022.
The 2022 Ford Expedition sales may be down, but they’ll unlikely remain low. This SUV is a mainstay in its class. It’s one of the biggest vehicles you can buy, and the latest iteration offers many family-friendly features in a safe package. So it’s unlikely this temporary dip in sales will have any long-term impact. Time will tell how long the supply chain delays and other problems will affect the Expedition’s sales.
