Tropical Storm Eta recently caused significant flooding in Fort Lauderdale, stalling many cars in the middle of the street. For Lamborghini drivers, however, life went on as normal.

A viral video shared by the Miami Herald shows a Lamborghini Huracan driving easily through the floodwaters, passing stranded sedans and continuing on its merry way. So what exactly makes this luxury brand so well-suited for apocalyptic scenarios?

How the Lamborghini Huracan plowed through the flood

Many watching the video footage of this Lamborghini were surprised and impressed by its ability to continue driving while significantly submerged in water — one viewer even referred to it as a “submarini.”

However, while we may not think of this luxury brand as particularly rugged, it actually has a number of design features that made it ideal for this aquatic drive.

Firstly, according to an auto buff quoted by the Miami Herald, the Lamborghini Huracan’s sleek design is perfect for moving through water. This vehicle is intended for use on the racetrack, meaning it needs to have a uniquely aerodynamic design that many daily drivers don’t have.

In fact, Lamborghini itself describes the Huracan as a vehicle “designed to cut through the air” — or, in the case, the flood water.

Engine placement also plays a role in how well this Lamborghini handled the flood. It is a mid-engine car, meaning that the engine managed to stay fairly protected even as the driver navigated the watery streets. Its rear is also higher than its front, helping to keep the exhaust above water.

A powerful, easily controlled vehicle

The Lamborghini Huracan’s ability to tackle flood water like it was nothing begs the question: What other design features could help this vehicle handle the apocalypse? Its powerful V10 engine is certainly a plus, providing high responsiveness and getting up to 60 mph in just 2.5 seconds.

The Huracan also has several steering systems that provide excellent control in all conditions. Its Electronic Power Steering system adapts to different driving styles and provides drivers with better control even at high speeds, while the Lamborghini Dynamic Steering system adjusts depending on the Huracan’s dynamic conditions.

This vehicle also offers all-wheel drive and Lamborghini All-Wheel Steering. At low speeds, these design features provide added agility — but of course, you’re more likely to be speeding during the apocalypse. Luckily, the Huracan’s design provides high levels of control, stability, and traction in any type of condition. 

Other apocalypse-ready features

In addition to its powerful design, the Lamborghini Huracan has a number of internal features that could definitely prove helpful in an apocalypse scenario. Perhaps most useful is the Lamborghini Integrated Vehicle Dynamics (LDVI), which the automaker describes as the “technological brain” of the EVO model.

LDVI takes in a range of information, including external environment, driver input, and driving mode, in order to anticipate the needs of the driver in real-time.

The Huracan’s human-machine interface, or HMI, is another high-tech feature that could help drivers rapidly respond to new situations. The HMI consists of an 8.4-inch touch screen that allows you to quickly and easily control your driving dynamics.

It also provides continually updating information on local traffic, and adapts your cabin lights to the environment so that you’ll always have good visibility.

Lamborghini vehicles are carefully designed and certainly beautiful to look at, but its surprising ability to adapt to crisis scenarios makes them that much cooler.

Of course, the six-figure price tag means that these luxury cars are pretty challenging to get ahold of for the majority of the population — but if you do happen to have one, you can rest easy knowing you’ll be ready to hit the road in the event of flooding, volcano eruptions, or zombie attacks.
