The Tesla Cybertruck is the next big thing that’s coming to American roads. The Cybertruck brings a lot of things to the table that traditional trucks are missing, and that has many people excited. Just like other highly anticipated Teslas, many people are preordering the Cybertruck. However, some people are skeptical about the number of Cybertrucks that have actually been ordered.

What is the Tesla Cybertruck?

The Cybertruck is Tesla’s very first electric truck that’s affordable and available to most Americans. The Cybertruck isn’t the first electric truck in the world or even the first electric truck that’s available for regular people. However, it’s still a Tesla, and not only does it have a lot of high tech features, but it also does many things that current trucks can’t do.

For example, the Cybertruck, like many Teslas, is a very high-performance vehicle. Tesla says that the Cybertruck can accelerate from 0 to 60 MPH in under 6.5 seconds with just one electric motor. With the three motor option, it can do that in under 2.9 seconds. These are comparable 0 to 60 times as sports cars. 

On top of the Cybertruck’s unique design, it will also be extremely tough. As Tesla tried to demonstrate in its unveiling of the Cybertruck, the Cybertruck will come equipped with armored windows. These features, along with the great 14,000 lb towing capacity of the highest trim of the Cybertruck, makes the Cybertruck one of the most unique and capable trucks on the market.

How many people have preordered the Tesla Cybertruck?

As Forbes reported, Tesla on average is receiving almost 6,000 preorders of the Cybertruck a day. In total, over 500,000 people have made a reservation for the Cybertruck. These are very high numbers for a truck that isn’t even available yet. And, at a price tag starting at about $40,000, this high number of reservations could mean a lot of money for Tesla. 

But there are 101 reasons why these massive numbers should be doubted. The first 100 reasons are that Tesla says that it only takes $100 to place a reservation in the first place. $100 isn’t chump change for most Americans, but it’s also not going to break the bank for many people, too. The other reason why these numbers should be doubted is that this reservation charge is completely refundable, according to Tesla. 

As a result of that, there is nothing stopping anyone from taking $100 out of their bank account, reserving a Cybertruck, and then refunding it later without buying the Cybertruck at all. That said, Tesla has a lot of fans, so there is reason to believe that many of those reservations will actually turn into a sale.

How many people will actually buy this truck?

Unfortunately, until the Cybertruck is actually available for purchase, that will remain a mystery. Tesla says that it will start producing the two and three motor Cybertrucks by late 2021, and that the single motor option will start production in late 2022. 

The single motor option has the least range but it’s still a capable truck. It’s also the most affordable option, so it might sell well. The single motor Cybertruck starts at $40,000. The two motor Cybertruck starts at $50,000 and the three motor Cybertruck starts at $70,000. 

While some Tesla fans may pay $50,000 to $70,000 for their car, most Americans have a budget and those numbers are probably beyond their budget. As a result, it’s totally possible that most of those 500,000 reservations are customers trying to buy the most affordable trim of the Cybertruck. It’s also possible that many rich and famous people have a reservation and will be buying the expensive trims, too.
