What’s new with the Toyota Avalon?

The 2021 Toyota Avalon offers no shortage of choice when it comes to trim levels and interior amenities. Available in 10 lavishly appointed trim levels, this year’s new model is the kind of sedan that can be had any way that you want it. That’s not all either. 

For the first time ever, the Toyota Avalon can be had with all-wheel drive. Available on XLE and Limited trim levels, Toyota’s Dynamic Torque Control AWD system comes paired with a 2.5-liter Dynamic Force four-cylinder engine and an eight-speed Direct-Shift automatic transmission to produce 205-hp.

Android Auto compatibility joins Apple CarPlay and now comes standard on all trims too. The 2021 Toyota Avalon is also Toyota’s first vehicle to integrate with a smartwatch or an Amazon Alexa-enabled device. Use your Apple Watch, compatible smartwatch, or an Amazon Alexa-enabled device to lock and unlock the car’s doors, start the engine, or even check the fuel levels.

Introducing the XSE Nightshade

Also new for the 2021 model year is the 2021 Toyota Avalon XSE Nightshade. According to Toyota, this all-new trim level is based on the 2020 XSE grade and gives the 2021 Toyota Avalon a “more extroverted look.”

Powered by a 3.5-Liter V6 engine that comes teamed with an 8-speed automatic transmission, the 2021 Toyota Avalon XSE Nightshade is capable of churning out 301-hp. Driving on a set of  glossy black 19-inch wheels, the XSE Nighsthade also features features a stunning black grille, mirror caps, rear spoiler, and unique badging. 

Taking on the competition

If you’ve got your heart set on a sedan with all-wheel drive, both the Buick LaCrosse and the Chrysler 300 are worthy competitors to the 2021 Toyota Avalon. According to Edmunds, however, both vehicles aren’t quite as fuel efficient as the new Avalon.

If all-wheel drive isn’t a necessity for you, the Kia Cadenza is a suitable match for the 2021 Toyota Avalon. The 2020 Kia Cadenza is more expensive than its Toyota rival, though. It’s also not nearly as fuel efficient, and offers less legroom for second row passengers. 

What will the new Toyota Avalon cost?

Opting of the base 2021 Toyota Avalon will set you back about $35,875. Naturally, as you step up trim levels or add additional features, that price will go up. 

Keep in mind that the new Avalon comes with a 36-month/36,000 mile basic new-vehicle warranty, a 60-month warranty that covers its powertrain for up to 60,000-miles, and corrosion coverage with no mileage limitations. This year’s new model also comes standard with ToyotaCare, which covers normal factory-scheduled maintenance and 24-hour roadside assistance for two years or 25,000 miles, whichever comes first.
