Here’s Why the Vast Majority of 2024 Chevrolet Silverado HD Are Duramax Diesel engines
With the new 2024 Chevrolet Silverado HD set to appear at dealerships soon, one of the big questions for buyers is which engine option to get. Two engines will be available, the 6.6-liter V8 gas engine and the 6.6-liter Duramax diesel. So, would it help your search to know which engine is the most popular?
Is the 2024 Silverado HD Duramax diesel new?
Chevy knows, and its truck marketing director is telling. Mike MacPhee, speaking at the 2024 Chevy Silverado HD ZR2 debut, said, “In the HD lineup, we’re running about 65 percent diesel, and what’s unique about this ZR2 build is we’re going to have the opportunity to flex-based on customer demand, between the diesel and gas mix. That said, I would expect based on some of the research that we’ve done, diesel is going to make up probably 70 percent-plus of these sales.”
The expectation of greater diesel engine sales than in previous years comes from the updated 6.6-liter L5P V8 turbodiesel Duramax. It now delivers 470 hp and 975 lb-ft of torque. For comparison, the gas 6.6-liter offers 401 hp and 464 lb-ft of torque.
Why is the 2024 Silverado HD expected to be mostly Duramax diesel equipped?
With the Heavy Duty-series trucks expected hard use, it makes sense that the diesel outranks the gas engine by plenty. And adding further to Chevy’s diesel expectations is the all-new Allison 10-speed automatic transmission. Splitting more gears means more torque at the low end and better gas mileage from less wind-up between shifts.
In anticipation of increased Silverado HD sales, today Chevrolet released news of HD discounts this month. The $500 Customer Cash applies to both 2022 and 2023 Silverado HD trucks. Some dealers still have 2022 models on their lots. So Chevrolet’s Chevy Spring Into Adventure promotion discount should help clear out the remaining Silverado 2500 and 3500 trucks.
How much have prices increased?
Original MSRP for the 2023 Silverado 2500 range from $43,395 for the WT trim to $71,395 for the High Country. For 2024, Silverado HD pricing increases to a base of $45,925 for the WT, to $72,895 for the High Country. The discount is available through May 31. Lower leasing options are also available through May.
This comes on the heels of Chevrolet’s reveal earlier this month of the 2024 Silverado HD ZR2 and ZR2 Bison. These are the first ZR2 packages to be available in 2500 and 3500 HD trucks.
Things are amping up for the 2024 Silverado, and identical 2024 GMC Sierra trucks, as we get closer to deliveries starting. Ordering opened up for the 2024 Silverado in mid-January this year. Deliveries are expected to begin next month, according to Chevrolet.
