Americans love the Hyundai Palisade. It’s the company’s best-selling SUV because it’s big enough, comfy, and reliable. But could it be even better as the Hyundai Palisade diesel?

The Palisade is the Hyundai version of the Kia Telluride SUV. Both are due to be redesigned for 2023.

Hyundai makes a Palisade diesel, we just can’t get one in the U.S. Hyundai buyers in India, Australia, Korea, and other countries get the diesel version of the Palisade. Here in the states, we’ll never see the diesel Palisade as the company readies new all-electric and more-efficient hybrid engines and phases out internal combustion engines altogether.

Does the Hyundai Palisade come in a diesel?

The Hyundai Palisade does come in a diesel version. While some countries do get the oil-burning engine, we don’t in the U.S. Hyundai also makes a diesel Tucson SUV that we can’t get here.

The diesel engine that the rest of the world gets is a 2.2-liter four-cylinder turbo-diesel. It makes 197 horsepower, but 325 lb-ft of torque. The diesel costs a premium outside of the U.S.

Diesel engines are great at making big torque figures for towing. Diesels usually get better mileage than their gasoline counterparts. But they’re loud, stinky, and it’s harder for a manufacturer to make one clean enough for U.S. air standards. That’s one of the reasons Volkswagen ran afoul of U.S. regulators several years ago.

Hyundai ended the development of new diesel engines in 2021. That doesn’t mean that Hyundai will stop selling diesel engines any time soon. But it’s not developing new ones and will phase out the old ones according to Korean news sources. The company is also working to phase out its gasoline engines. Hyundai will stop selling combustion engines in the U.S., Europe, and other parts of the world by 2040.

The Hyundai Palisade comes with a 3.8-liter V6 in the U.S. that makes 291 horsepower and 262 lb-ft of torque. That’s plenty of grunt to shuttle the seven-passenger SUV around.

And that SUV offers a lot. The Palisade is darn near perfect. It’s designed to get families and all of their stuff from a-to-b as comfortably as possible, and that means that all three rows get their own air vents, for example. It has 16 cup holders. There’s a large 10.25-inch infotainment screen with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, as well as factory navigation.

How much is a fully-loaded Hyundai Palisade?

The top-of-the-line Hyundai Palisade is the Calligraphy edition, and it starts at $48,535 The Calligraphy doesn’t get any powertrain upgrades, but it does get an improved interior. The 2022 Palisade Calligraphy can easily be spotted by its chrome-look front and rear trim, quilted leather, and perforated, heated, Nappa leather-wrapped steering wheel. All-wheel-drive is optional on the Calligraphy, but every other option and luxury Hyundai can think of is standard.
