Will the 1,111-Hp 2022 Lucid Air Dream Edition Go Beyond Plaid?
Tesla’s Model S Plaid can certainly hang with the quickest speed freaks. But Tesla might not have the lock on fast EVs for much longer. The Lucid Air is almost here, and when it launches, the Dream Editions will be the first out of the gate. Up until now, Lucid has only teased at what its highest-trim sedans are capable of. But now, the official Lucid Air Dream Edition specs are out—and they’re rather ludicrous.
The 2022 Lucid Air Dream Edition offers Range and Performance
Spec | 2022 Lucid Air Dream Edition Range | 2022 Lucid Air Dream Edition Performance |
Drive type | Dual-motor, AWD | Dual-motor, AWD |
Power | 933 hp | 1,111 hp |
Torque | 737+ lb-ft | 737+ lb-ft |
Battery capacity | 113 kWh | 113 kWh |
0-60 mph time | 2.7 seconds | 2.5 seconds |
Claimed range | 503 miles (projected) | Not available |
Among the multiple Lucid Air trims, the Dream Editions stand at the top in terms of speed, range, and price. And their official specs are arguably more impressive than what Lucid originally estimated. When Lucid first announced the limited-edition Air Dream Edition, it claimed the electric sedan would offer 1,080 hp, go 0-60 mph in 2.5 seconds, and go 503 miles on a charge. Technically, it achieved those targets, albeit with two trims instead of one.
However, the Air Dream Edition didn’t just meet its horsepower claim. MotorTrend independently ran two Dream Edition Ranges on a California highway loop to test their range claims. After a 445-mile drive from LA to San Francisco to Lucid’s headquarters, the EVs had 35 and 72 miles of range remaining, respectively. Averaging the results gives the 2022 Air Dream Edition Range a real-world range of 498.5 miles. That’s less than 1% off of Lucid’s original claims.
Admittedly, this result is based on two cars, so EPA testing may deliver some different figures. And as of this writing, Lucid hasn’t released official range estimates for the Dream Edition Performance. But according to MotorTrend, the Range’s, well, range “is 50 miles greater” than the Performance.
Still, on paper, it seems like the Lucid Air Dream Edition is on track to nail its targets, relatively speaking. But is that enough to make the Tesla Model S Plaid nervous?
How does the 2022 Lucid Air Dream Edition compare to the Tesla Model S Plaid?
Spec | 2022 Lucid Air Dream Edition Performance | 2022 Tesla Model S Plaid |
Drive type | Dual-motor, AWD | Tri-motor, AWD |
Power | 1,111 hp | 1,020 hp |
Torque | 737+ lb-ft | 1,050 lb-ft |
Battery capacity | 113 kWh | 100 kWh |
0-60 mph time | 2.5 seconds | 1.98 seconds (MotorTrend) |
1/4-mile time and trap speed | 9.245 seconds @ 157.26 mph (prototype testing) | 9.25 seconds @ 152.6 mph (MotorTrend) |
Claimed range | 449 miles (based on MotorTrend report) | 348 miles |
On paper, the 2022 Tesla Model S Plaid is less powerful than the Lucid Air Dream Edition Performance. It also has less battery capacity and a shorter range. However, the Model S Plaid has more torque than the Dream Edition Performance. And it’s technically faster from 0-60 mph.
Well, kind of. Firstly, MotorTrend achieved that sub-2-second 0-60 mph time by excluding rollout and running on a prepped dragstrip. While excluding rollout is standard industry practice, it’s not real-world realistic. Neither is running on the grippy surface of a dragstrip, such as the one where Jay Leno set a ¼-mile record in another Tesla Model S Plaid. Furthermore, the Plaid requires a lengthy preparation cycle to accelerate that quickly. So, IRL, it’s not quite that fast.
Yet it might still be faster than the Air Dream Edition Performance. One Tesla Model S Plaid owner ran their EV on a public highway and saw an average 0-60 mph time of 2.17 seconds, Road & Track reports. That’s including rollout time. In addition, Lucid’s prototype achieved those ¼-mile results on a sticky dragstrip, too, Road & Track notes.
But there’s another wrinkle: range. As expected, the Tesla Model S Plaid doesn’t go as far as the Long Range on a charge. However, MotorTrend only managed 305 miles of highway range with its Model S Plaid tester, not 348.
How much will it cost when it becomes available?
The Tesla Model S Plaid does have one more advantage over the 2022 Lucid Air Dream Edition, though. The former’s $129,900 purchase price is noticeably lower than the latter’s $169,000 starting price. And the Model S Plaid is available today; Air Dream Edition deliveries won’t start until later this year.
However, there will be cheaper Air models available after the Dream Editions are delivered. And while they won’t be as fast or as powerful, they should have the specs needed to give Tesla pause.
