Station wagons have faded from the American new car market due to lack of demand and decreasing sales. This is why both station wagon and Audi enthusiasts are excited about the latest announcement from the automaker: Soon, the Audi RS6 Avant will be available for U.S. customers to purchase. This sports wagon was previously offered in European markets only.

The 2020 RS6 Avant is set to be released sometime next year. However, as CarAndDriver pointed out, the car will face steep competition. Its top three luxury sports car models are the Jaguar XF Sportbrake, Porsche Panamera Turbo Sport Turismo, and Mercedes-AMG E63 S wagon. Let’s take a look at how the RS6 wagon measures up against these models.

Interior design

The Audi RS6 Avant offers many leather options for its interior, sports seats, and steering wheels, as well as a good selection of infotainment features. Porsche’s Sport Turismo seats come with a lot of options for driver comfort, but its cargo space is somewhat lacking. The Mercedes E63 performs the best in terms of interior comfort. Its material feels luxurious, comes standard with things like heated and massaging front seats. It also has a bigger cargo hold.

The Jaguar XF Sportbrake is the only vehicle that falls short in this category. The interior lacks the premium materials of its competitors, making the seat cushions uncomfortable. However, it does have a decent cargo hold and its passenger seats are more spacious than some models.

Fuel efficiency

There’s no denying the thrill of driving a sports vehicle, but these cars are known to be gas guzzlers. Both the previous Audi RS6 model and the latest Mercedes E63 wagon only averaged 15 MPG on city roads and 23 MPG on the highway, with a combined rating of 18 MPG. These numbers aren’t the worst, but there’s definitely room for improvement.

The Jaguar Sportbrake’s standard engine fares slightly better, with a rating of 21 MPG in the city and 28 MPG on the freeway. The Porsche Sport Turismo’s hybrid engine has the highest fuel efficiency rating of 29 MPG and an all-electric driving range of up to 14 miles.

Price

The Jaguar XF Sportbrake has the lowest price of the four at $66,145, while its S trim starts at $72,795. The Porsche Panamera‘s base trim costs $98,350, while the base hybrid costs slightly more at $108,150. The Mercedes E63 wagon is the most expensive with an average cost of $108,850 to $112,735. The price of the 2020 Audi RS6 hasn’t been announced yet, but most car enthusiasts speculate it will be in the same price range as the E63.

Performance

When determining the power of a vehicle, it comes down to the engine. The RS6 is powered by a twin-turbo V8 4.0-liter engine capable of 591 hp and 590 lb-ft of torque. Its acceleration rate is promised to be 0 to 62 miles per hour in 3.6 seconds. The RS6 can also be purchased with a Dynamic Package Plus, which will likely enhance these specs further.

The Jaguar XF has a four-cylinder engine capable of 296 hp and a V6 engine in its S model capable of 380 hp. A 330-hp V6 engine is standard with the Porsche Sport Turismo, but consumers can also get either a twin-turbo 457 V6 engine or a hybrid engine capable of 462 hp. Mercedes‘s E63 S wagon definitely wins this round with a twin-turbo V8 capable of 603 hp and an acceleration rate of 0 to 60 miles per hour in 3 seconds.
