Will.I.Am and Mercedes to Unveil A Bizarre Coupe
Mercedes is no stranger to doing collaborative concept cars with celebrities. Most recently, the legendary German luxury brand teamed up with Virgil Abloh to create a Maybach EV concept car. Now, it seems a new one is coming on the heels of a collaboration with Black Eyed Peas superstar Will.I.Am.
Will.I.AMG previews seem to show a performance coupe with a G-Class front end
According to Autoblog, Will.I.Am, Mercedes, and AMG came together to develop this car.
From the preview photos, it appears to be some sort of elongated coupe. However, pictures of the front end resemble the grille and headlight shape of the legendary Mercedes G-wagon. Obviously, the intentionally obscure images make it a bit difficult to piece together what we’re looking at. The front end resembles the G-Class. However, it looks much lower and has a roofline more reminiscent of the C-class.
Fortunately, our curiosities won’t have to linger for too long since the reveal date is only two days away. The Cinco De Mayo release does not have a scheduled time. So, it’s best just to keep your eyes peeled on May 5, 2022.
Perhaps the best thing we already know about this car, though, is its intent. The project is a joint effort for a good cause.
“Will.i.am created a car for Mercedes-AMG that will help fund inner-city school engineering programs to prepare our youth for a technological tomorrow,” says a statement on the Will.I.Am official website.
Between that quote and Will.I.Am’s past work with Mercedes on electrification, that pretty much cements the thought that this will be an electric car. If not fully electric, it’s likely to be a hybrid at least.
This isn’t the first collab between the star and Mercedes
Back in September 2021, he teamed up with Mercedes to release the new Mercedes-AMG GT 63 S E Performance, an electrified version of the brand’s iconic supercar.
“Cars are my passion, especially those from AMG. And I love to improve an existing product, to push the limits, and to fuse things that were never supposed to go together; that’s hip hop – the house I was born in. And that’s what drives me – I am honored to be part of AMG’s journey into the future of fantastic hybrid high-performance driving,” said Will.I.Am
In addition, Philipp Schiemer, CEO of Mercedes, referred to Will.I.Am as a “brand ambassador and family member for our journey into the new era of electrified driving performance.”
“He also carries the same DNA as we do: always going one step further, innovating with passion, and pushing boundaries to achieve new goals,” said Schiemer.
So, given the past involvement with high-performance cars and the collaboration of AMG, this is likely to be quite a vehicle. With Will.I.Am’s above quote; it seems pretty fair to assume that it will lean more toward the hybrid side of things.
May 5th can’t come soon enough!
