Will the 2022 Chevy Equinox Be A Better SUV?

The Chevy Equinox isn’t exactly too old, but it can feel that way for some reason. Especially when the 2022 Chevy Equinox will be redesigned. Does that mean the 2021 is worth buying, or should you wait for the new model to come out soon?  Is the 2022 Chevy Equinox worth waiting for?  The 2021 …

The 2021 Chevy Equinox seems just fine, and maybe that’s part of the problem. It’s a good SUV, but not the best or worst. According to U.S.News, the Chevy Equinox is a middle of the pack option, as it ranks in sixth place on the list of best compact SUVs for 2020 and 2021. The Honda CR-V came in first place, while the Mitsubishi Outlander came in last, by the way.

So, why is the Equinox currently so average? With a low MSRP of $23,800, it’s pretty competitive against rivals and costs less in some cases. For example, the Toyota RAV4 has an MSRP of about $26,050.

However, you don’t get much with the Equinox. It’s a good SUV, but doesn’t excel in any areas to be a great one. The 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine only pumps out 170 hp and 203 lb-ft of torque.

You can’t upgrade to the 2.0-liter turbo-four engine with the 2021 model. It is pretty depressing that this engine option was dropped because it provided 252 hp and 260 lb-ft of torque. This engine was also needed to increase the max towing capacity from 1,500 to 3,500 lb.

Along with a weak base engine, the 2021 Chevy Equinox also ranks poorly for having a so-so interior quality. While it doesn’t have the nicest feeling of luxury, the seats are still spacious and comfortable.

What to expect for the 2022 Chevy Equinox

The 2022 Chevy Equinox has a new look. It will have refreshed headlights, a new grille, updated bumpers, and more to provide a more distinctive look. If it borrows anything from the Blazer, it could also get dark 19-inch wheels with a blacked-out exterior trim.

In the interior, hopefully, the materials will be updated to have a higher end feel. It boasts a unique shift knob, red stitching, and black upholstery so far, though. A gloss black trim will be on the console too.

While the turbo-diesel engine option was dropped for the 2021 model year, hopefully, the new engine option will close the fuel efficiency gap. However, the Equinox is expected to keep the same lackluster base engine option.

However, it will have a new 2.0-liter turbo option with 237 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque. This is less power than the old turbo engine has to offer, but it should provide a better fuel economy. Also, drivers probably won’t notice the difference.

New tech in the Chevy Equinox

The Chevy Equinox will still have an 8-inch infotainment center, which is smaller than what rivals have to offer. We aren’t sure if the 2022 model will have features like a heads up display or wireless Apple CarPlay or Android Auto yet. But we do know it will have all-wheel drive available.

Available safety features will include lane-keeping assistance, lane departure warning, HD camera surround vision, automatic parking assist, adaptive cruise control, and more.

So, if you want a revised interior and more aggressive look, wait for the 2022 model. Otherwise, the 2021 Chevy Equinox is fine. You might be able to save even more with the 2020 model too.
