The old Toyota Tundra is finally getting a makeover. But will the 2022 Toyota Tundra be able to compete with rivals like the Ford F-150, Ram 1500, and more? Even the Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra have had at least one full-on redesign since the Tundra was last updated. 

What to expect with the 2022 Toyota Tundra 

The Toyota Tundra has been aging pretty gracefully, but it’s currently pretty outdated compared to rivals. The Tundra was last redesigned in 2007, so that’s nuts. Its current looks are over a decade old. 

But the 2022 Toyota Tundra will have to bring the heat to tackle options like the freshly remodeled Ram 1500 and updated Ford F-150. According to Four Wheeler, it should bring the heat. 

The new Toyota Tundra will ride on Toyota’s new truck chassis, which is appropriately called the Toyota New Global Architecture-F (TNGA-F). It will have body-on-frame underpinnings that include more high-strenght steel and other weight-saving materials. Perhaps it will use some aluminum, like the Ford F-150. 

To improve its ride quality with the new platform, the Tundra may adopt coil springs to replace its current leaf springs. The coil springs will pair better with the truck’s live axle. This could help it compete against the Ram 1500 and its smooth ride. 

But more importantly, the new frame should improve the current model’s towing and payload figures. The Toyota Tundra can carry a payload of up to 1,730 lb, while the Ford F-150 can carry a payload of up to 3,270 lb. It can also tow up to 10,200 lb, while the 2020 F-150 is expected to tow up to 14,000 lb. So, no wonder the Tundra is getting left behind. 

Will the Tundra have more power? 

The 2022 Toyota Tundra needs more muscle to catch up with rivals, but it’s making an odd choice. Toyota is getting rid of the Tundra’s V8 engine options. It’s expected to enter the 2022 lineup with only V6 engine options. 

So, how can a V6 compete with V8 options? Well, in the Lexus LS500, you’ll find a 3.5-liter V6 engine with 416-hp 442 lb-ft of torque, so that’s exciting. In the Ford F-150, the 5.0-liter V8 engine has 385 hp and 378 lb-ft of torque. 

Plus, Toyota sure does enjoy going electric, and it’s the prime time for electric and hybrid trucks to enter the segment. We could see a plug-in hybrid variant or an electric option. But Toyota better hurry to catch up with the Ford PowerBoost Hybrid and 2021 F-150-EV. 

When will we learn more about the 2022 Tundra? 

Hopefully, more information will be released about the 2022 Toyota Tundra soon. We have no clues about what to expect in the new interior! Also, the exterior is expected to have a taller grille and hood. It could look like a bigger version of the recently updated Toyota TRD Pro. 

Also, what about pricing? According to The Weekly Driver, the 2022 tundra will have an MSRP of about $35,000 for the base model. Prices for higher trim options could quickly exceed $55,000. But once you add 4×4, the tow package, the hybrid engine, and more, that price doesn’t sound outrageous.
