There is a significant problem with electric pickup trucks so far. They are extremely expensive. They are more expensive than regular gas-powered trucks that are already seemingly impossible to afford. But will Ford change this trend? Making the Electric Ford F-150 affordable is apart of their plan, at least.

Will the 2022 Ford F-150 EV be too expensive?

Recently, Rivian announced the 2021 Rivian R1T has an MSRP of $69,000. That’s a lot and made us realize that most electric pickup trucks are extremely high priced.

The Tesla Cybertruck begins around $39,900 for the base model, while the top of the line option will be around $69,000. Also, the GMC Hummer EV starts around $112,595.

According to Market Watch, the 2022 Electric Ford F-150 will begin around $55,000. But we don’t buy it. They have no evidence of this, and Ford hasn’t mentioned the official pricing. Plus, that would be a lot more than the Tesla Cybertruck, one of the Ford F-150 EV’s largest rivals.

But on the other hand, the 2021 Ford F-150 Hybrid is expensive. You can only get the hybrid powertrain with the SuperCrew XL trim. Then depending on which engine you choose, the hybrid system will cost between $2,500 to $4,495 to add. Remember to include 4×4 for another $3,495 too.

The least expensive hybrid option is the 2021 Ford F-150 CL with the 3.5-liter V6 engine for $41,145. This is for the barebones options. We don’t know how many trim options the Electric Ford F-150 will cost, but due to the number of upgrades it comes with, it will probably be more expensive than the hybrid.

What we know about the Electric Ford F-150

The timeline for the new Ford F-150 EV is a little unclear. It could be ready as a 2022 model year option or a 2023 option. Either way, rumors currently suggest that the launch is set for the middle of 2022.

Also, while it will have a slightly updated look, it won’t look brand new. It will incorporate the current F-150 style with modern attributes like an LED bar that goes across the entire grille. The modest look could be to attract more fleets to it as a work truck.

The Ford F-150 EV will probably be suited for both work and play with some off-roading upgrades. We were shocked to see one rumor that suggested it would be all-wheel-drive instead of 4×4. However, the Ford Bronco Sport and Ford Escape are both only AWD.

Ford F-150 EV Power

To compete against rivals, the Ford F-150 EV will need to have power. The engine could be paired with two to three motors. The prototype pulled 1 million pounds on train tracks, but that number is very inflated. Towing on train tracks is much easier than on the pavement.

Also, the Electric F-150 will need a good range. The 300-mile range for the GMC Hummer EV is pretty low. Also, the Jeep Wrangler 4xe has a 400-mile range. So, will the Ford F-150 EV try to match or beat competitors?
