Will the Ram Revolution EV Make More Power Than a Cummins?
Ram just revealed its first fully electric prototype, the Ram 1500 “Revolution.” With a full-size bed, three rows of seats, and 35-inch tires, the Revolution is a monster of an EV. The automaker is being coy about just how much power its new truck makes, leaving Ram fans to wonder if the Revolution EV’s motor will produce more horsepower and torque than Ram’s legendary Cummis I6. And there’s a good chance it will. Here’s what we know for sure.
The Ram 1500 Revolution EV will have two separate electric motors
We know that the Ram Revolution electric truck will ride on what’s called a skateboard chassis. It will be a full-frame truck with a massive battery pack tucked between its frame rails and an electric motor for each axle. We do not yet know exactly how powerful these specific motors will be.
My colleague Dan Mayfield reported on how much horsepower Ram’s new line of electric motors make. They will range from a small 94-horsepower unit to a massive 442.5-horsepower version. So if Ram releases a Revolution with the largest possible motors in both the front and the rear, you’d think it would make 885 horsepower. But the math might not be that simple.
How much horsepower will the Ram Revolution make?
There’s a good chance the top-trim Ram Revolution will make 850 horsepower. But its maximum power output may come down to its electrical system, not its motors.
Electric vehicles with multiple electric motors are sometimes limited by how much electricity they can pull from their battery pack at once. If the Ram Revolution can’t pour enough juice into its two motors, then both motors won’t be able to make full power simultaneously.
That said, Ram’s parent company, Stellantis, is pioneering an 800-volt charging system for its EVs. If it succeeds, chances are the Ram 1500 Revolution will be able to charge and draw from its batteries faster than most vehicles on the road. For comparison’s sake, the current generation of Teslas is limited by a 400-volt charging system.
Until Ram releases its official horsepower numbers, there is no way to tell exactly how much power its new EV will make. But there is a very good chance that the top-of-the-line Ram Revolution will boast 885 horsepower. This number, twice as much as the 420-horsepower high-output Cummins I6–and even higher than the 702-horsepower Hellcat-powered TRX–may convert even the most die-hard combustion fans.
Best of all, electric motors are even better at producing torque than diesel motors are.
How much torque will the electric Ram make?
We have very little info on the torque output of the new electric Ram, but we expect these numbers to be higher than horsepower. As an illustration, the new Ford F-150 Lightning makes an impressive 775 lb-ft of torque and the Ram Revolution will likely make even more.
The Ford Lightning is an interesting comparison because it also comes with one electric motor for each axle. That said, the Lightning only makes 426 horsepower. So if the top-trim Ram EV actually churns out 885 horsepower, we expect it to make significantly more torque than the F-150 Lightning. Ram may even be able to outdo the 1,000 lb-ft of torque that its current high output Cummins offers.
One thing that makes electric vehicles drastically different than internal combustion vehicles is their flat torque curve. An electric motor makes 100% of its torque at 0 RPM. This means they will excel at towing and acceleration. They will also probably not need transmissions. Electric motors do actually lose a small amount of torque as their RPM climbs.
Ram announced that it’s targeting a maximum range of 500 miles for its new Revolution electric truck. If other EVs are any example, its highest range will require a battery pack upgrade and won’t apply to configurations with the largest engines available.
Ram is going electric. When it does, it will probably offer trucks that produce even more power than Ram buyers expect from their Cummins-equipped pickups.
