A lot of good news came from the 2024 Ford Mustang reveal in Detroit. For instance, the seventh-generation pony car would pack a naturally-aspirated 5.0L V8 in the GT, a manual transmission option, and even a track-bred performance variant, the Dark Horse. Still, in an automotive landscape where an increasing number of cars offer all-wheel drive (AWD), Ford seems to have held out with its beloved muscle car. Will Ford make a 2024 Ford Mustang with AWD to combat the likes of the outgoing Dodge Challenger SXT AWD? 

Is the 2024 Ford Mustang AWD? 

Unfortunately for Mustang fans in challenging climates, Ford isn’t going to produce a 2024 Mustang with AWD. Instead, every Mustang trim, including the entry-level EcoBoost and V8-powered GT, will send power to the rear wheels. That’s not necessarily a bad thing, though. RWD makes for a lively sports car driving experience and connects the latest seventh-generation S650 Mustang to the tail-happy pony cars of the past. 

Also, Ford’s latest track-day weapon, the Dark Horse, won’t offer AWD, either. However, it will incorporate advanced driver aids and perhaps one of the most hilariously fun features on the upcoming platform, the Electronic Drift Brake. Instead of grippy AWD, the drift stick sends drivers into slides on demand. 

Did Ford produce an AWD Mustang?

The bad news continues for folks who want an AWD pony car. Ford never made a mass-produced AWD Mustang, with one exception. The controversial and fully-electric Mustang Mach-E offers “eAWD” in its performance-oriented GT trim. 

Although Autoweek says many fans quickly dismiss the four-door EV crossover as “not a Mustang,” Ford chose to badge the vehicle a Mustang, complete with the galloping pony car badge. Depending on your definition of Mustang, the Mach-E is your only option for an AWD vehicle with a Mustang moniker. 

Is there a hybrid Mustang?

Not only is Ford abstaining from an AWD 2024 Ford Mustang, but the marque is also not including a hybrid in the lineup. However, much like the Chevrolet Corvette’s C8 generation, a hybrid could be an option for later model years in the S650 Mustang generation. Still, the Mustang lives on in a market where its principal competitors, the Chevrolet Camaro and Dodge Challenger, have thrown in the ICE towel. Instead, Ford chose to defy the segment by continuing its pony car for another classically conventional chapter. 

What can you get instead?

If you want a muscle car with AWD, you really only have one choice. You can get a Dodge Challenger SXT or GT with optional AWD instead of the standard RWD. Furthermore, with a Pentastar V6, the Challenger SXT and GT produce good torque with as much as 30 mpg on the highway. 

However, if you want a V8 in your AWD Mopar muscle car, you’re out of luck. Neither the Dodge Challenger nor the Charger offer AWD with a 5.7L, supercharged 6.2L, or 6.4L accompaniment. Scroll down to the following article to read more about muscle cars like the Ford Mustang and Dodge Challenger!
