Drivers in New York City are used to navigating horrendous conditions on some of the nation’s most congested streets. One woman recently experienced possibly the worst traffic jam of her life when she had no other choice but to give birth inside a Tesla Model X.

Luckily, New York police and firefighters jumped into action and got the woman and baby some much-needed medical attention. It was undoubtedly a ride this young mother will never forget.

According to the New York Post, an unidentified pregnant woman and her husband were en route to the hospital in a Tesla Model X electric vehicle when they got stuck in traffic.

When they found themselves at a standstill on Fifth Avenue in Manhattan’s Garment District, the quick-thinking father-to-be flagged down NYPD officers. He explained that his wife was in labor and that he didn’t think they would make it to the hospital in time to deliver the baby.

NYPD Sgt. Edward Riley told the Post: “Officers began escorting the vehicle to NYU Medical Center but had to reroute to Bellevue [Hospital] due to heavy traffic.”

Riley said the police escort came to a halt when officers noticed the Tesla had stopped. He said, “Upon checking on the occupants, they discovered the female had given birth in the vehicle.”

Plenty of room to deliver a baby

The family-friendly Tesla Model X crossover SUV has falcon wing doors, which came in handy when getting the new mother out of the electric vehicle. Unlike traditional cars, the Model X has rear doors that open upward instead of out. The doors have a double hinge on the vehicle’s roof, creating plenty of room to get in and out of the vehicle.

Photos from the scene show the upward-lifting doors fully open, offering easy access for emergency responders. The paramedics were able to maneuver the tight New York City street by pulling a gurney up to the backseat of the Model X. They had no trouble gently lifting the woman and new baby out of the car.

The all-electric crossover SUV, which has an MSRP of $105,000, proved it had ample space to safely deliver a newborn. Tesla CEO Elon Musk, the father of baby X Æ A-Xii, might already be thinking of ways to incorporate the sounds of childbirth into his latest software updates.

The Tesla Model X falcon wing doors saved the day

This isn’t the first time someone has given birth while stuck in Manhattan gridlock. Over the years, expectant mothers have delivered their babies in NYC cabs or alongside busy highways. It’s uncommon, but it does happen.

According to Parent Herald, a New York woman gave birth in the backseat of her Honda Fit and later jokingly asked the automaker to gift her a new ride. Though she didn’t get a new car from the company, it offered to replace the backseat and pay for a thorough cleaning.

The Tesla Model X proved to be an adequate place to give birth when traffic wasn’t cooperating with the young couple.

According to Teslarati, the SUV’s falcon wing doors “provide ample space for easy egress.” During the unveiling of the Model X, Musk claimed the unique doors “make it easier to go into and out of the vehicle.” The pregnant woman proved his statement true.

The NYPD spokesperson reported that the mother and her newborn were transported to NYU Medical Center and are both in good condition.
