Woman With Arthritis Was Walking to Coldplay Show When Coldplay’s Chris Martin Offered Her a Lift: ‘What a Decent Bloke’
Saundra Glenn heard Coldplay would be in her home town of Luton, England, and was determined to see the rock band. But the 64-year-old suffers from arthritis and “a dodgy right hip,” so just getting to the accessibility box office was slow going. The woman had stopped to rest against a fence with a big black Mercedes pulled up alongside her.
A woman opened the back door and told Glenn to get in. There, in the back seat, was Coldplay’s front man. Glenn naively said, “Oh that’s Chris Martin, I can’t get in with him.” But Martin said, “Yes you can, just come on in.”
She hopped in the back seat next to Martin and the two of them chatted while they drove. Glenn joked, “I’m 64 Chris, I don’t do festivals, I’ve come just to see you and now I’ve seen you and I can go home.” The revelation got a laugh out of Martin.
Martin said of Glenn’s age, “You don’t look it.” When he heard about her community work, he urged her to keep doing what she was doing and added, “It’s lovely to hear about what you do.”
The two of them decided to skip the accessibility box office and drove to the backstage area reserved for musicians. Martin and his team stuck around until they made certain Glenn had a wristband and a golf cart to take her to a special seat by the stage so she wouldn’t need to walk any farther.
Martin and Glenn took a selfie. Then she asked him about Luton’s campaign to sing his famous song “Yellow” with the lyrics changed to “Orange” to honor the local soccer team. She asked, “Go on are you changing yellow to orange?” Martin was tight-lipped: “I can’t tell you that, but I can say, wait until the end. I’m doing something special.”
It turns out Martin, who loves the town of Luton, went above and beyond and wrote them an all-new song titled “Orange.” And Glenn was the first to know.
Of the random act of generosity, Glenn said. “He’s shown that kindness rules the world. Be more Chris Martin. Be more that humble guy that doesn’t mind picking up an OAP.”
