America loves Ford’s tiny pickup truck
The Blue Oval has been as innovative as ever in the last few years with nameplates like the Mustang Mach-E, Ford F-150 Lightning, and Ford Maverick. Ford is reinventing itself by adding hybrid and electric vehicles to its portfolio.
Thus far, the Mach-E, F-150 Lightning, and Ford Maverick have been competing well in their respective segments. The Ford Maverick was ranked as the best small truck for 2022 by several major automotive publications.
Order books for the 2023 Ford Maverick recently closed due to overwhelming demand. People are clearly diggin’ the Maverick, and in this economy, it’s easy to see why the affordable pickup is getting so much love. The Maverick is the most affordable pickup truck that Ford has produced in recent years. Its fuel economy is unparalleled. The small truck’s design is quirky. Even its bed, the Flexbed, deviates from the norm. The Maverick isn’t your conventional pickup truck, and that’s why it has become so wildly popular.
The Ford Maverick challenges everything you thought you knew about pickup trucks. Ford reinvented the wheel in a sense, and it paid off in a huge way. The Maverick clearly works as a standard hybrid with a gas engine option, but what about as an EV? Is there a market for an electric Ford Maverick (perhaps a Ford Maverick Lightning)?
The Ford Maverick would make a great affordable EV
Assuming the addition of a fully electric powertrain would add a significant chunk of change to the Maverick’s starting price, an electric Ford Maverick could cost around $32,000 or more.
A Maverick EV would likely be much more expensive than the standard hybrid Maverick, but chances are it would still be much cheaper than most of its competitors. If Ford did produce an affordable electric Ford Maverick, there would be a market for it in large cities where drivers have decent access to charging infrastructure.
Ford proved that it could produce an amazing electric pickup truck with the F-150 Lightning. It also proved that it could make a great tiny truck. So, an electrified Maverick could be a hit.
Is an electric Ford Maverick on the way?
The Blue Oval will eventually produce several new electric pickup trucks. Since the brand has already created an electrified F-150, the chances of a new electric full-size pickup are slim. So, the Ford Ranger or Ford Maverick could be next to get an electric sibling.
The ideal electric Ford Maverick would have at least 220 miles of driving range and cost under $35K. Small pickup trucks are becoming more popular. Are small electric pickup trucks next? According to Electrek, Ford’s goal is to be an all-electric brand in Europe by 2023. Small truck EVs could have a huge role to play in Ford’s electric future.
