World’s Fastest Car Goes to Auction in Scottsdale on January 25
The world’s fastest production car made to date, the 2022 Bugatti Chiron Super Sport 300+, was released to only 30 customers three years after its prototype broke 300 mph in 2019. Only eight were designated for the American market. Now, production car number 9 is hitting the auction block via Bonhams|Cars on January 25, 2024.
Exiting factory testing with 250 miles driven, it mostly just sat for a year. Subsequently, the current odometer reading is only 255. Bonmans|Cars lists the car’s estimated value between $5M and $5.5M. The original retail price was $3,825,000. As such, the owner is expected to pull over $1M profit from the sale.
The Bugatti Chiron Super Sport 300+ is the fastest production car ever made
The Chiron Super Sport 300+’s predecessor, the 2016 Bugatti Chiron, is indeed fast. In fact, its speed was actually limited to 267 mph. Bugatti cited a lack of appropriate production tires for speeds nearing 300 mph. Officially, the new 2016 Chiron was marketed with a top speed of 285-287 mph.
How did Bugatti break 300 mph? First, take the Chiron’s 8.0L W16 quad-turbo and add an extra 100 hp. This brings the Super Sport 300+ a walloping 1600 hp. That’s not a typo. Then, Bugatti extended the Chiron’s body by 10 inches. Finally, the car’s rear end was redesigned with pure aerodynamics in mind. This led to a lower diffuser install and stacked tail piping.
The Chiron Super Sport 300+ team crossed 304 mph during its final day of 2019 testing with Germany’s Technical Inspection Association as witness. Production deliveries of the hypercar came three years later with the moniker 300+ and the well-deserved title “world’s fastest car.”
