Most pickup truck buyers aren’t shopping based on gas mileage. In fact, most of what makes a good pickup truck results in poor gas mileage. However, as trucks and engine technologies further develop, gas mileage is now a real consideration for some truck customers. As the truck savvy ecoist may already know, the Ford F-150 Hybrid has the best gas mileage. However, the F-150 Hybrid isn’t all roses.

How many miles per gallon does the 2022 Ford F-150 Hybrid get?

The 2022 Ford F-150 Hybrid ranked No. 1 in best gas mileage (not including electric trucks) for all full-size pickup trucks, with 15 mpg in town, 24 mpg on Highways, and a combined 20 mpg overall. Despite its popularity and killer gas mileage, the 2022 Ford F-150 Hybrid has experienced some reliability issues unbecoming of a pickup truck.

Is the 2022 Ford F-150 Hybrid reliable?

Despite it scoring highly on predicted owner satisfaction and plenty of other metrics, one score sent the hybrid version of the most popular pickup truck of all time tumbling to the bottom of the pile; reliability.

Unfortunately, the 2021 model, the first year of the hybrid, saw a plethora of reliability and quality issues. Many owners reported the model experienced rust and body integrity issues after only a few months, as well as problems with the brakes, power equipment, and in-car electronics. Also, the drive-line struggled, and it even had some major transmission issues.

While the 2022 Ford F-150 Hybrid fixed some of the issues, it also added some new ones, like engine cooling and climate control problems. And, somehow, the brakes got worse. Consumer Reports still gave the F-150 Hybrid a poor predicted reliability score. J.D. Power also reports a merely average reliability and quality rating. This is a dagger, no matter how well the truck performed otherwise.

Certainly, there is something good about the 2022 Ford F-150 Hybrid

The 2022 Ford F-150 Hybrid is one hell of a truck. It comes with a 3.5-liter V6 hybrid engine making a whopping 430 hp. This truck is powerful, fast, torquey and has one of the coolest features ever included on a pickup truck.

You may recall when Texas froze over in 2021; headlines praised the Ford F-150 Hybrids for powering houses and keeping families warm. This is because the F-150 Hybrid has a built-in power generator that is strong enough to power most homes. While most people don’t often need their vehicle to power their refrigerator, it’s not uncommon to need auxiliary power on a construction site or even in the backyard. This power generator is one of the coolest features ever.

Aside from the parlor tricks, the Ford F-150 Hybrid can pull an impressive 12,500 lbs. That is just good old-fashioned truck stuff that the F-150 still delivers.

It’s hard to move past such a spotted reliability reputation, especially for a truck that is so new. However, the Ford F-150 Hybrid has so much potential. We have faith that Ford will work out the kinks. It’s not uncommon to see issues in the first couple of model years of any new vehicle. Reliability and quality should naturally improve as well once the supply chain issues and production delays start to improve. Here’s to hoping.
