While looking at a list of the best mid-size SUVs, I was surprised by what came in last. The worst mid-size SUV is actually quite popular for being durable and reliable. It might be pretty old, but families don’t care. 

Why is the Toyota 4Runner the worst mid-size SUV? 

According to rankings by Car and Driver, the 2024 Toyota 4Runner is the worst mid-size SUV. It’s down in 32nd place with a score of 4.0 out of 10. 

The best mid-size SUV on their list is the Kia Telluride. It’s in the number one spot with a score of 10 out of 10. A few interesting SUVs that outrank the 4Runner include the Hyundai Santa Fe, Jeep Wrangler, Nissan Armada, and Ford Bronco. 

But why is the 4Runner struggling? Because it’s old. Critics complain about its outdated interior, powertrain, and chassis. The fifth generation launched in 2010 and the 4Runner got some updated tech in 2014. 

The next-generation 4Runner will arrive in 2025 with a host of modern updates and new engines. It will probably have a higher price tag too. 

Instead of waiting for the 2025 4Runner, the current model still has plenty to offer. For example, it’s incredibly reliable. J.D.Power gave it an 86 out of 100. Scores between 70 and 80 are average while scores between 81 and 90 are above-average. 

The average Toyota 4Runner is expected to last between 250,000 and 300,000 miles. But with regular maintenance and care, they can survive much longer. There are examples out there with over 600,000 miles. 

Plus, for being the worst mid-size SUV, the 4Runner has an excellent resale value. It earned a 90 out of 100 from J.D.Power. So, if you have fun with the old beast for a while you can probably snag a deal on trading it in. 

It’s also well-equipped for tackling off-roading challenges. The third row provides ample space to take all of your kids and pets along. If you need more room, take advantage of the roof rails or the 5,000 lb towing capacity.
