The 2022 Ram 1500 topped the Consumer Reports list of full-size pickup trucks again. The Ram 1500 boasts the most luxurious cabin and ride comfort of any of its competitors. It also is capable of towing tremendous weight. There is little to dislike about the 2022 Ram 1500 except one thing, fuel economy. 

What is the worst aspect of the 2022 Ram 1500? 

The fuel economy was the one place where Consumer Reports found a major fault with the Ram 1500. The new Ram pickup only gets 17 mpg with one of the most desirable options, the V8 hybrid. This hybrid system does not boost mpg but instead supplements the low-end power of the truck. However, the diesel V6 gets a friendlier 23 mpg. Despite the expense of paying over $3 a gallon for fuel in something that only gets 17 mpg, that number is two mpg more than the outgoing model. So, that’s something. 

How much power does the Ram 1500’s V8 hybrid have? 

This engine option makes a powerful 395 hp and 410 lb-ft of torque. CR says the hybrid support helps with power numbers and assists in the start/stop feature. This hybrid power results in a 0-60 mph run of only 7.1 seconds. 

The more efficient diesel V6 makes only 260 hp but ups the torque figures to 480 lb-ft. The turbodiesel engine provides plenty of power, which lends itself to strong towing. Although it’s considerably less powerful than the V8, it is a bit plusher than the diesels from back in the day. 

How reliable is the 2022 Ram 1500? 

Consumer Reports gave the Ram a three out of five on predicted reliability. Although this isn’t a stellar score, it still beats many of its competitors, like the 2022 Ford F-150 and the 2022 GMC Sierra 1500. 

The main reason for this lower score is that the 2022 Ram 1500 has already had one recall so far. This came as a surprise, considering the previous model’s reliability reports on CR seem very mild. Few owners reported many serious issues from the 2021 model, meaning this new one should follow suit. It’s possible that the recall was more due to the hurried and stressed nature of our current production situation than a poorly designed or low-quality truck. Time will tell. 

What makes the 2022 Ram 1500 so popular? 

The interior. It is a simple and potentially underwhelming aspect of a pickup truck, but it is true nonetheless. The Ram 1500 is widely considered the most luxurious pickup truck on the market. Despite the lingering hard plastic surfaces, the Ram’s interior is still better designed and better dressed than any of its competitors. 

There is plenty of storage, the attention to detail is strong, and the fit and finish of materials show a concerted effort by Ram to bring more comfort to the sector. However, CR says the optional Deluxe cloth bucket seats in CR’s tester Big Horn “look a bit low-rent” for the $50,000 price tag. 

Is the 2022 Ram 1500 worth it? 

The Ram 1500 is a segment leader. Aside from it being the number 1 full-size pickup truck rated by Consumer Reports, owner reports corroborate CR’s take. Despite the poor fuel economy with the V8, the Ram still has the best interior in the game, the suspension is dialed, it comes with a pile of engine options, and looks good to boot.
