Sometimes critics give too much love to standout aspects of a particular vehicle rather than appreciating other models’ overall package. That seems to be the case with the lack of love given to the feature-rich 2020 Volkswagen Tiguan.

This compact SUV doesn’t have statistics that jump off the board. The VW Tiguan is, however, a vehicle that will keep its driver and passengers content. After all, most drivers are more concerned about their morning commute than experiencing sports-car handling.

It just may be a mistake to count this VW model out when it comes to your next car purchase. Let’s take a closer look at why the 2020 Tiguan could be the perfect fit for you.

It’s no surprise that buyers want the most for their money. That’s why many savvy car shoppers seriously consider the 2020 Volkswagen Tiguan. It’s packed with an array of standard features that leave drivers of other compact SUVs in a state of envy.

The 2020 Tiguan’s base model is slightly more expensive than some of its competitors, with a starting MSRP of $24,945. However, this is a case where you get what you pay for.

The Tiguan S comes with an infotainment system that’s Android Auto and Apple CarPlay compatible, a Wi-Fi hotspot, heated side mirrors, and a tire pressure monitor. Additionally, it provides a boatload of standard driver-assistance systems. These include blind spot monitoring, automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, forward collision warning, rear cross-traffic alert, and a rearview camera.

Notable available upgrades include a panoramic sunroof, rain-sensing windshield wipers, leather upholstery, and a surround-view parking camera.

The Tiguan handles surprisingly well

The 2020 Volkswagen Tiguan isn’t the premier athlete of the family. That distinct honor goes to the Volkswagen Golf GTI. However, that’s not to say the Tiguan isn’t an enjoyable ride.

Consumer Reports gave the 2020 Volkswagen Tiguan an impressive score of 84/100 in its road test. The publication noted, “On the road, the new Tiguan is easygoing and user-friendly.” Consumer Reports also praised its nimbleness, saying, “In the handling department, the Tiguan is enjoyable to drive and secure when it’s pushed, but it’s not quite as agile as the Ford Escape and Mazda CX-5.”

The Tiguan’s 184-hp 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine delivers mediocre performance and middling fuel economy. Drivers won’t want to rely on this SUV for towing, as its underpowered engine can only haul a maximum of 1,500 pounds. Notably, this is the only engine option, and unlike many of its rivals, the Tiguan doesn’t have a hybrid model.

Volkswagen’s compact SUV is also extremely versatile. The 2020 Tiguan provides some of the most spacious cargo room in its class. Its available hands-free power liftgate makes it a serious contender for buyers who want a great road trip or tailgate SUV.

Meanwhile, it comes as a two-row SUV, but shoppers with large families can choose a model that features an available third row of seating.

There’s more to the 2020 Volkswagen Tiguan than meets the eye

It’s easy to overlook options that don’t make headlines. The Tiguan is underrecognized, but it doesn’t underperform. This well-rounded compact SUV may come up short with critics, but it could come through with flying colors for your family. Don’t sleep on the 2020 Volkswagen Tiguan during your next vehicle search.
