The Chevy Silverado is one of the most iconic pickups out there. Sales are always through the roof and each year brings something new to potential Silverado owners to keep their interest peaked.

One recent release brought with it the choice of a handful of new engines. One of them is one we’ve seen before, but on a different Chevy product altogether, the Corvette. Yes, this pickup comes with the option to install the same engine as the Corvette. U.S. News and World Report reviews the new Silverado and talks about the 6.2-liter V8 engine. 

What engine does the Silverado share with the Corvette?

The 2020 Chevy Silverado has the same 6.2-liter V8 motor that the 2020 Corvette has. The one plopped into this pickup truck comes with dynamic fuel management and produces 420 hp with 460 lb-ft of torque. By adding a performance package, though, the motor could get enough boost to bring the number up to 435 hp, making it even more powerful.

When placed in the Corvette, the motor runs at 495 hp with 470 lb-ft of torque, provided you have the Z51 package. This LT2 engine pairs with an eight-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission that enables it to get an acceleration time of 2.8 seconds for a 0 to 60 mph run. 

What are the other engine options for the 2020 Chevy Silverado?

The newest engine offered for the 2020 model is the 3.0-liter Duramax Turbo-diesel inline six-cylinder. It produces 277 hp and is paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission.

Using air to liquid inter-cooling technology with a low-pressure exhaust-gas system, this motor gives the Silverado more responsiveness than most other rival trucks offer. Surprisingly, this much power, from an engine, doesn’t make the pickup feel like it’s going to fall apart from excessive shaking. 

Another motor, that’s standard on the LTZ, LT Trail Boss, and the High Country is the 5.3-liter EcoTec3 V8. This one comes in two variations, one with dynamic fuel management (DFM) and the other with active fuel management. The DFM comes with an eight-speed transmission, except for the 4×4 versions of the High Country and the LT Trail Boss, which get a 10-speed automatic instead. 

The last two options are the 4.3-liter EcoTec3 V6, which produces 285 hp and the 2.7-liter Turbo, which runs at 310 hp. The 4.3 motor comes standard on the WT, Custom, and Custom Trail Boss trims. Chevy’s 2.7 Turbo comes with the RST and the LT and comes with auto start/stop technology. 

Is the Corvette engine the best choice for the Silverado?

Chevy shows off the lineup of engine options they have for the Silverado. The V8 motor, which is also seen in the Corvette, is the best in class for hp and torque in a V8. If you’re looking to use your Silverado for some heavy towing jobs, this engine would be the one to choose, since it’s also the best in class for towing capacity. It’s rated to handle up to 13,400 lbs. 

However, if you’re looking for decent fuel economy figures, you might want to look to another option instead. The 3.0-liter Duramax offers 33 mpg on the highway, 29 mpg if you choose the 4WD version. If you want decent performance but don’t quite want to spend the money that the bigger engines bring, then the smaller V6 and the 2.7-liter options are your best bet. 

The Corvette engine packs plenty of performance for what the Silverado needs. For a work truck that tows, you couldn’t ask for a better motor to do the job.
