The Mazda CX-5  does just about everything well. It’s one of the few mainstream SUVs that can hold its own against actual luxury models. But as accomplished as the CX-5 is, it could be completely different in the near future.

Mazda has magnificent plans for the next generation of the CX-5

The CX-5 is due for a redesign. There have been talks that the CX-5 will become a full-fledged luxury car, as Autoblog highlights. Best Car, the Japan-based magazine, says it learned from Mazda company insiders that the next-generation CX-5 would be essential for the brand’s transition from the mainstream market. We can anticipate the grand changes for the 2023 model year.

Presently, the CX-5 can already hold its own against luxury compact SUVs, including the BMW X1. But with the redesign, this Mazda will supposedly take on the BMW X5 and the Mercedes-Benz GLC. That means we can expect drastic changes for the CX-5 since the current version isn’t as large or as fast as the X5 or the GLC.

Furthermore, we can expect the CX-5 to come with a much higher price tag to compete in the luxury midsize SUV class. Most models in this realm are upwards of $50K. Best Car also says that the revamped CX-5 will come standard with an updated rear-wheel-drive platform that the next-gen Mazda6 will have. Additionally, the 2023 CX-5 will likely have a six-cylinder engine, making it more comparable to the German brands. 

What’s new with the 2021 CX-5? 

While it’s fun to speculate about the next-gen CX-5, there’s plenty to admire about the current model. For 2021, the CX-5 brings more advanced safety features, new style options, and a simplified engine lineup. Essentially, the CX-5 has an option for every price point. The MSRP range for the 2021 model is $25,270 – $37,405.

The CX-5 returns with the same standard 2.5-liter four-cylinder that produces 187-hp. Many buyers will be satisfied with the base engine. But for those who crave more power, there’s the 250-hp, 2.5-liter four-cylinder that’s available on the upper-level trims. No matter which engine you go for, a six-speed automatic standard. You also have a choice between FWD and AWD.

Most of the buzz around the 2021 CX-5 is for the Carbon Edition model. Carbon Edition models are distinguished by Polymetal Gray Metallic exterior paint and 19-inch alloy wheels with Black Metallic finish. This trim is also available with red leather seats. 

And if you’re a tech-lover, you’ll also be particularly excited about the new CX-5. It now comes with a 10.25-inch touchscreen, replacing the outgoing model’s 7-inch one. Additionally, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and a subscription-based wifi hotspot are now standard.

The CX-5 has a solid history of dependability, so it’s one of the best compact SUVs you can buy used. You may want to go with a lightly-used 2020 model to get some of the latest features at a discount. The 2018 version has especially made a lot of people happy too.
