GMC might be making news thanks to the return of the Hummer, but the Yukon is only hurting the American company. Past models have been received with high praise, but the 2020 model of this SUV is taking a lot of heat from review sites. It doesn’t help that the Yukon is beginning to develop a rep for having dashboards that crack, door handles that break, and door lock actuators that have to be replaced.

U.S. News was very outspoken about how the 2020 GMC Yukon is not the best choice for consumers. It does have a lot of standard features, but that wasn’t enough to get it a boost in the ratings. 

The 2020 GMC Yukon hasn’t changed much

One of U. S. News biggest complaints revolved around the lack of updates. Automobile technology is advancing rapidly, and it’s frustrating when automakers don’t take advantage of it. 

Some of the standard features offered include a 5.3-liter V8 that produces 355 horsepower and 383 pound-feet of torque, seating for up to eight people, cloth seats, a rearview camera, front and rear parking sensors, and the Teen Driver system.

It also includes an 8-inch touch screen, a nine-speaker Bose premium audio system, Bluetooth, a Wi-Fi hot spot, satellite radio, HD Radio, voice commands, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto.

The interior got a lot of great reviews for its upscale looks, and most critics seem to be pleased with it. The ride is also smooth for passengers. 

The GMC Yukon bombed in the ratings

One of the biggest pitfalls facing the 2020 GMC Yukon is the lack of cargo space. U.S. News stated,

“The Yukon has 15.3 cubic feet of space behind the third row, 51.7 cubic feet behind the second row, and 94.7 cubic feet with both rear rows folded down. Those are some of the smallest cargo figures among large SUVs. The Yukon’s high cargo load floor also reduces available storage space.”

The dreaded third row also brought the score down. It’s no secret that most third rows aren’t the most comfortable, and the Yukon is no exception. Kids should have no issues, but any adults who are condemned to the back might be better off riding separate.

The 2020 GMC Yukon also scored low when it comes to predicted reliability. J.D. Power gave it a 2 out of 5. That might not bother some potential buyers, but anyone who drives kids around want to know they’ll arrive there safely.

U.S. News isn’t the only review site that wasn’t impressed with the 2020 GMC Yukon. Consumer Reports ranked the Yukon XL as 59 out of 100 in the large SUVs division. While the XL gets more cargo room than the Yukon, it’s not exactly reassuring that neither are performing well in the ranks.

What 2020 SUV should you buy instead?

The good news about the 2020 Yukon is that there is plenty of competition out there, so if the Yukon doesn’t meet your needs, you can always purchase something else. The large SUV division is robust, and there are plenty of choices out there for potential consumers. 

The Ford Explorer is one of those competitors. It has more room for cargo. The third row is also huge, with up to five more cubic feet of space than the Yukon. It also has a higher towing capacity and has more safety features. 

The 2021 GMC Yukon is getting a lot of new — and much needed — changes. Much of this is focused on safety features, like a nine view camera system, and heads up display that keeps you up to date. With that in mind, if you want to buy a new GMC Yukon, it might be best to hold off for the 2021 model.
