Toyota’s new Sequoia SUV will not only be made in the USA, but it will be built in San Antonio Texas. Toyota has been building trucks in Texas since 2006. Because the 2023 Toyota Sequoia shares a chassis with the new Tundra, Toyota will build the two vehicles side-by-side.

You may know that Toyota was originally founded in Japan. But did you know Toyota trucks are built in Texas?

In 2003, Toyota broke ground on an all-new factory in San Antonio, Texas. By 2006, the company was manufacturing vehicles in its new factory. Toyota has invested $3 billion in the 2,000-acre campus. Toyota San Antonio can assemble up to 208,000 vehicles each year.

Toyota not only operates a factory in San Antonio, but several its component suppliers operate on the same campus. The company also researches and designs several aspects of its vehicles in San Antonio. Toyota employs 3,200 team members in San Antonio, and its on-site suppliers employ another 4,000.

The Center for Automotive Research estimates that between supply companies and spinoff jobs, Toyota’s Texas presence supports 50,000 jobs. That’s one in every 200 Texas workers.

For its part, Toyota takes pride in its Texas connection. For example, Toyota’s San Antonio campus sits on the site of an old ranch founded in 1794. This is how the retro-themed Toyota Tundra 1794 trim got its name.

The 2023 Sequoia will have a lot in common with the Tundra

For its third-generation, the Toyota Sequoia will share a lot with the Toyota Tundra. This third-row SUV rides on a shared chassis: Toyota’s Next Generation Architecture, Full-Frame (TNGA-F). This chassis features a fully-boxed ladder frame, rear coil springs, and a twin-turbocharged V6.

Toyota’s first TNGA-F vehicle was its 300-series Land Cruiser. The first North American TNGA-F vehicle was the 2022 Tundra, followed by the Lexus LX 600.

The all-new 2023 Toyota Sequoia is the latest vehicle built around the TNGA-F chassis. Because the new Sequoia SUV and Tundra truck will have so many components in common, Toyota decided to relocate Sequoia production from its Indiana factory to San Antonio.

Are you thinking of an SUV but want to support workers here in the United States? Many international automobile companies assemble their SUVs here in the US. Some of these vehicles are built in the U.S., others are simply assembled in the US out of foreign-built components.

Firstly, there are several additional US-made Toyota SUVs. Toyota will continue to manufacture its Sienna and Highlander in Princeton, Indiana. In addition, it builds the Rav4 hybrid in Georgetown, Kentucky. The new Mazda CX-50 and the Toyota Corolla Cross will both be built at Mazda/Toyota’s joint factory in Madison, Alabama.

Subaru builds most models–the Outback, Legacy, Impreza, and Ascent–at its facility in Lafayette, Indiana.

Honda makes its popular CRV in both its East Liberty, Ohio plant and its Greensburg, Indiana plant. It builds the Honda Passport and Pilot in Lincoln, Alabama.

Nissan builds its Rogue and Pathfinder in Smyrna, Tennessee. Nissan builds the Murano alongside its trucks in Canton, Mississippi.

Hyundai builds the Tucson, Santa Fe, and Santa Cruz in Montgomery Alabama. The Kia Sorento and Telluride come from “Kia Manufacturing” in West Point, Georgia. Volkswagen assembles the Atlas in Chattanooga, Tennessee.

BMW’s X3, X4, X5, X6, and X7 hail from Greer, South Carolina. Finally, the Mercedes GLE and GLS Class come from Vance, Alabama.
