Your Next iPhone (or TV) Could Be Made Next to This New Foxconn Pickup Truck
Foxconn, the same company that makes iPhones, TVs, and other consumer electronics, is now turning its focus to the automotive space. This week, Foxconn released the details on its new all-electric Model V all-electric pickup, as well as a new crossover and SUV. It makes sense for the electronics company to dive into the all-electric automotive industry, but what will its first vehicles look like?
Foxconn doesn’t make vehicles, but you probably own something the company made
Hon Hai Technology Group, or Foxconn, makes iPhones, sure, but at its heart the company is a contract electronics maker. It counts Sony, Dell, Inc., and BlackBerry Ltd. As clients. It has plants in several countries, from its home in Taiwan to mainland China, Brazil, Mexico, and the U.S. One of its major focuses, according to the Chicago Tribune, is high-resolution LCD screens. Those screens go in phones, TVs, monitors and more.
Foxconn recently formed a partnership with Lordstown Motors, which owns a former GM manufacturing plant in Lordstown, Ohio. At the plant, its building the new Endurance truck for Lordstown Motors, as well as the new PEAR for Fisker. Lordstown is hoping to deliver 50 trucks this year and an additional 500 in the first half of 2023. The plans include for the Model V to be made in America, possibly at the Ohio plant, according to Inside EVs.
Foxconn is coy on the Model V’s details
The Model V is the first electric pickup truck designed and developed in Taiwan. It can hold 2,000 pounds in the bed, and it can tow 6,000 pounds, according to Foxconn. The company didn’t share exterior dimensions, but it looks to be about the size of a midsize truck, like the Toyota Tacoma or Nissan Frontier. It does have four doors and seating for five, and what looks to be off-road tires. Unless the company makes an off-road version, the low air-dam on the front gives clues that this should be a a city truck.
Could it be based on the same platform as the Lordstown Endurace truck?
The Foxconn crossover and SUV are aimed at Tesla’s Model 3 and Y
The company also showed off its new Model B crossover SUV, which it said is “the mainstream for the younger generation.” The Model V incorporates some interesting features that make it stand out, such as a vertical spoiler on the back pillar to reduce drag, and a large flat grill with a mail-slot duct. It should have a range of about 280 miles.
The company showed off its Model C SUV last year, and says the new version is a production vehicle. Though we don’t know electric engine specs, Foxconn says it go from 0 to 100 kph (62 mph) in 3.8 seconds with a range of 434 miles. Foxconn says it will hit the roads in Taiwan in the second half of 2023.
