Odds are, if you’re in the market for a new pickup, you want one that’s going to last for kind of a while. And why not? Buying a new pickup will cost you a pretty penny, after all. Fortunately, when it comes to the Toyota Tacoma, you can expect it to last for a pretty long time. Don’t just take our word for it, though. According to iSee Cars, the Toyota Tacoma is one of the longest-lasting trucks on the market today.

How many miles will a Toyota Tacoma last?

Not too long ago, iSee Cars combed through the data and analyzed more than 15.8 million cars sold in 2019. In analyzing that data, the research firm set out to determine which vehicles boast the highest percentage of cars that have reached 200,000-miles. So, how did the Toyota Tacoma do in the iSeeCars study? Pretty well, actually.

According to iSee Cars, on average, 1.8 percent of pickups built every year will make it past 200,000-miles. When analyzing which light-duty pickup trucks are most likely to reach 200,000-miles, iSee Cars says that five pickups rated above the 1.8 percent average for the vehicle class, with the Tacoma landing in the top three. And overall? iSee Cars says 2.5 percent of Tacoma models will last more than 200,000-miles. 

“Of all vehicle types, pickup trucks are the most likely to reach 200,000 miles with a 1.8 percent average for the segment, double the average for SUVs,” said iSeeCars CEO Phong Ly. “Pickup trucks are commonly used as work vehicles and are likely to accrue more miles than a typical passenger car while being more likely to undergo preventative maintenance and necessary repairs.”

How the Toyota Tacoma compares to other pickups

But the Toyota Tacoma isn’t the only pickup that iSee Cars says will last upwards of 200,000-miles. According to iSee Cars’ study, you can count on 3 percent of Honda Ridgeline pickups to last for more than 200,000-miles. iSee Cars predicts that 2.9 percent of Toyota Tundra models will be on the road for at least 200,000-miles too.

The most common complaints about the Toyota Tacoma

Now, just because iSee Cars predicts that a good percentage of Toyota Tacoma models will last for more than 200,000-miles, that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t anticipate dealing with a few problems along the way. According to Consumer Reports, this year’s new Tacoma earned a three out of five predicted reliability rating, which is a fairly average score. The truck’s most common trouble spot? Its transmission, which Consumer Reports says may experience some minor issues related to leaks, sensor problems, among other things.

Fortunately, this year’s model does come standard with a 36-month/36,000-mile limited warranty and a 60-months/60,000-miles powertrain warranty that covers the vehicle’s engine, transmission, drive system, and the like. Standard too are sixty months and unlimited miles of rust through coverage. 

The key to keeping your truck on the road for miles to come

There’s a lot that goes into determining how long a Toyota Tacoma will last. While iSee Cars’ data says you can expect a Tacoma to last for more than 200,000-miles, that’s not always going to be the case. If you really want to ensure that your Tacoma lasts for miles to come, you’re going to have to put some work into it. 

YourAAA Daily reports that the key to your pickup’s longevity is how well you take care of it. So, if you hope to see that 200,000-mile mark on your Tacoma’s odometer, you’re going to want to keep an eye on your truck’s fluid levels, tire pressure, lights, brakes, and battery. Don’t forget about regularly scheduled oil changes too. Fortunately, all Toyota models come standard with complimentary maintenance, so keeping your Tacoma in top-notch condition shouldn’t be all that difficult.
