This is the 40-meter sailing trimaran Domus. Designed by a collaboration of Rob Doyle Design and Van Geest Design, the boat will be the first zero-emission superyacht over 750 metric tons. It combines solar power, hydro-regeneration technology, and hydrogen fuel cells to be able to make this claim. 

How much living space does the Domus boat have?

Said to have the interior space of a 60 metric ton monohull yacht, Domus will also have unlimited range. “An optimized system of solar power and battery storage allows the yacht to motor during daylight hours and then transfer over to the battery system at night,” according to the designers. “This also means that Domus is fully silent with zero emissions while at anchor.”

To keep roll to a minimum, it will feature a two-degree heel angle to improve both performance and a comfortable sail for guests. It also reduces drag, making it faster than a similarly-designed catamaran. All of the yacht’s onboard systems and propulsion are located in the center hull and not in the two pontoon side floats. Those become space for storage. 

The central hull also houses all of the rigging. This helps to simplify the overall structure as well as simplify the pontoons’ arms. It also makes the overall structure more similar to a traditional boat’s architecture. Yet, it accommodates many more amenities and potentially large amounts of guests. They will enjoy luxuriating on two decks, with a total of over 8,400 square feet of space. Six guest cabins along with four VIP and two owner’s suites divide the living space. Each of the owner’s suites has separate lounge areas for your boating pleasure. 

What are some of the features inside of the Domus boat

Besides the sleeping accommodations, the Domus also features a cinema room, gym, a large bar, spa area, and swimming pool. All of this is incorporated into a visually open layout, which is the theme of the yacht. Domus means a certain type of single-story Roman house, built around an atrium. So the interior layout borrowed from that design philosophy. 

“We strongly believe if you want the benefits of multihulls at a 40-meter-plus size the only practical solution is a trimaran,” say the designers. “Just because superyachts are what they are now, does not mean they should stay this way. We were constantly looking at every aspect of the design and saying, ‘is there a better way’? We truly believe that this project will redefine what a multi-hull sailing superyacht can be.”

Right now, some of these projections will need to be developed and built, as Domus is only a concept. But it could portend future yacht designs both large and small. Beyond the Domus, the design team is also currently working on a larger version.
