The Lexus model lineup is ample with choices of sedans, coupes, and SUVs, and given the general market desires of most buyers, it’s no real surprise the automaker’s crossovers are outperforming sedans on the sales charts. Here are the recent best-sellers among Lexus models and how well they are selling as compared to the luxury brand’s cars.

The RX and NX are the best-selling Lexus models so far this year

More buyers have been leaving Lexus dealerships in a new midsize RX or compact NX so far into 2023, according to sales figures compiled by GoodCarBadCar. The two models are outpacing the sales numbers of any other model in the brand’s lineup.

Through May, the RX is by far the sales leader, with over 47,000 units sold. The NX is far behind, with 27,113 units sold through the first five months of 2023, but its figures are still nearly double that of the No. 3 best-selling Lexus model of the year, the ES sedan.

Both models are experiencing positive month-over-month and year-over-year sales. The NX was up 107 percent in May sales versus last year, giving its annual sales a 71 percent boost so far into 2023. The RX’s growth isn’t as staggering — May sales were up 23 percent with a six percent increase in annual sales through the month — but still a positive harbinger for Lexus’ sales year.

The RX remains a solid overall choice in the midsize luxury SUV segment

The Lexus RX’s increased sales could be partly attributed to its complete overhaul for 2023. The RX now sports familiar but sharper overall styling, and it’s available with a quartet of powertrains to allow buyers to play some pick-and-choose. Available engines include the standard turbocharged four-cylinder cranking out 275 hp, a hybrid making 246 hp, a 2.4-liter hybrid developing 367 hp in the F Sport Performance model, and a plug-in hybrid model that borrows its 302-hp drivetrain from the NX450h+ model.

The revamped RX isn’t nearly as athletic as some of its competitors, including the Genesis GV70 or BMW X3, but it excels at being a feature-rich quiet and comfortable cruiser.

The 2023 Lexus RX starts at $48,550, with the F Sport topping the non-hybrid model lineup at $57,750. Hybrid models start at just under $50,000 MSRP.

Sales of the NX are surging

The Lexus NX is experiencing a significant uptick in sales, and this could be down to the model being overhauled in 2022 to make it a more appealing option in the compact luxury crossover class.

Similar to its larger sibling, the NX wears handsome styling, comes with a long list of standard features, delivers a refined and quiet cabin, supple ride quality, and there are four engine options from which to choose.

Pricing for the base NX 250 with front-wheel drive starts at $40,205, with the all-wheel drive NX 350 ringing it in the mid-$40,000s. A plug-in hybrid, the Lexus NX 450h+, is also available with prices starting at $58,655 MSRP.

Lexus’ sedan model sales aren’t as impressive as its SUV figures

Lexus’ crossover and SUV sales are up across the board year-over-year for May, which isn’t the case for all the Lexus models – especially sedans and coupes.

Annual sales of the midsize ES are down 13 percent year-over-year through May, while the RC coupe is down 19 percent. The compact IS sedan sales were down 18 percent for May versus last year to hold the model’s annual growth to four percent so far into 2023. The full-size LS is having a slightly better start to the year. It’s up seven percent through May, but with just 1,040 total models sold, it’s far from the most popular offering from Lexus’ stable.
