The 2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee is one of the most popular SUVs on the market. Its popularity is primarily the result of its versatility as an SUV. However, like many used Jeep Grand Cherokee models, the 2023 edition has some problems. It’s not the worst 2023 SUV on the market, but it is one of the most popular problematic options for a few reasons that matter to drivers.

2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee isn’t particularly safe or reliable

The new Jeep Grand Cherokee might be a great looking vehicle, but recent models have had a few significant issues. Because of this, the 2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee isn’t considered one of the most reliable SUVs. It has a 77 out of 100 predicted reliability score from J.D. Power. Additionally, Consumer Reports says that the vehicle will be less reliable than other new vehicles. It should be noted that the 2022 Jeep Cherokee was also bad in this area.

In addition to being one of the least reliable SUVs, the 2023 Grand Cherokee isn’t all that safe either. Though the NHTSA hasn’t tested the latest model, the last few have ranked as poor in a few key areas. In fact, the 2022 Jeep Cherokee tested received an overall rating of poor. So if safety is your focus for a new vehicle, which it is for many, there are much better options out there.

There’s only one engine option

One of the downsides to the new Jeep Grand Cherokee is that it only offers one engine option. It’s a fairly powerful option, but it’s not great for those who want real variety. According to Edmunds, the 2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee has a 3.6-liter V6 with a maximum output of 293 horsepower and a torque of 260 lb-ft. The base trim is rear-wheel drive, but the vehicle also comes in four-wheel drive configurations. In addition, this Jeep SUV uses an eight-speed automatic transmission.

Regarding speed, the latest Grand Cherokee accelerates from 0 to 60 miles per hour in 7.4 seconds. This isn’t slow, and it’s one of the highlights of the Jeep. However, for those wanting better speeds, there is also the 4xe version, which is the hybrid Grand Cherokee. It gets from 0 to 60 miles per hour in about 5.3 seconds. This hybrid SUV is about 0.3 seconds faster than the now discontinued V8 version of the vehicle.

The Jeep Grand Cherokee has only decent fuel economy

The next problem with the 2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee isn’t a problem for all owners. The SUV isn’t one of the worst regarding fuel economy, but it could be for those who seek an SUV for everyday driving and not so much off-roading. The latest model gets an average of 19 miles per gallon in the city and 26 on the highway. There are far worse options, but many people could complain about this. However, this is fairly acceptable for this size of off-roading capable SUVs. For example, the Land Rover Defender is less efficient.

The new Grand Cherokee doesn’t present any notable problems now. However, based on recent models of the SUV, it has a high chance of doing so. Of course, predicted reliability ratings aren’t everything, but they can be a great indicator of how a vehicle will perform down the road.
