The Hyundai Ioniq 5 has been racking up awards since its introduction in 2021, even taking the crown as  MotorBiscuit’s Best Electric Vehicle/Hybrid of 2022. And we are far from alone in singing praises of the Ioniq 5 as it was recently named one of Good Housekeeping’s Best New Family Cars for 2023, taking the crown as the publication’s best electric crossover.

With its stylish looks, strong pragmaticism, impressive driving range and charge times, and a bevy of safety and comfort features, the Ioniq 5 continues to be a standout in the EV segment.

The top reasons why the 2023 Ioniq 5 is a great family crossover

The Ioniq 5’s commendable driving range is enough to hustle the family across town for play dates, soccer practices or loading it up for a road trip. The rear-wheel drive, standard range model fitted with a 58-kWh battery provides an EPA-rated 220 miles of driving range, which is plenty for most daily needs.

Those wanting all-wheel drive with a zippy 320 horsepower and 446 pound-feet of torque can opt for the all-wheel drive model with its 77.4-kWh battery, which is rated for up to 256 miles of range. To really stretch the Ioniq 5’s legs, the rear-wheel drive long-range version is equipped with the same 77.4-kWh battery as the AWD version and increases the driving range to a notable 303 miles.

e-juicing the Hyundai’s batteries is about as quick as the 320-hp models. The Ioniq 5 can be charged at up to 250kW, revamping its charge from 10 to 80% in just 18 minutes in ideal conditions.

The Ioniq 5’s practicality also shines with its surprisingly spacious cabin. Front seat passengers have plenty of room to stretch, and adults are easily accommodated in the rear with 39 inches of legroom and 37.5 inches of headroom even with a sunroof installed. It also provides 27.2 cu-ft of cargo space behind the rear seats to hold the approximate 8,421 items needed to haul just two small children a few hundred miles.

The Ioniq 5’s cabin is rich with perks for the parent at the helm. Hyundai offers two versions of its Highway Driving Assist, an effective semi-autonomous driving feature which allows “more time to look at the passing scenery and talk to your passengers,” Good Housekeeping noted.

Or, to try and break up a back-seat fight (our addition). There’s also an available reclining and extending driver’s seat that allows for ultimate relaxation while charging, and a bevy of active safety features and driver’s aids once the family is back on the road.

The 2023 Ioniq 5 shines overall

The Ioniq 5 is offered in four trims with a choice of battery sizes and drivetrains, allowing buyers a range of models to fit their needs. Starting at $41,450 and rising to $56,500 for the luxe Limited AWD model, the EV crossover isn’t the most affordable family car available. Still, with its impressive all-electric performance and long list of standard features, even in base models, the Ioniq 5 presents good value for the money.

Some of the more notable standard features include dual 12.3-inch displays, smart cruise control, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, heated front seats, five USB ports, and blind-spot and rear cross-traffic avoidance assists.

The top-spec Limited trim is fitted with add-ons like leatherette upholstery, ventilated front seats, a Bose stereo system, head-up display, wireless charging, Hyundai’s Digital Key feature, and other amenities.

There are also unique features like Hyundai’s blind-spot view monitor, which displays a video feed of the EV’s blind spot when the turn signal is engaged, allowing drivers to keep their heads forward while checking for surrounding cars.

The other top new family cars of 2023

Good Housekeeping named 25 models to its top family cars of 2023. Joining the Ioniq 5 were family-hauling stalwarts like the Honda Civic and Accord, Chevrolet Tahoe, Chrysler Pacifica and Volkswagen Golf GTI.

There were also new entrants like the BMW i4 as the best electric car, the Genesis GV70 (best luxury mid-size, two-row SUV) and the Toyota Crown (best full-size sedan). The revamped 2023 Toyota Prius earned the distinction of best hybrid car.

With trucks now often serving as movers of the whole family, the Ford F-150 Lightning was named best electric pickup, and the Ram 1500 took the crown for the best pickup overall.
