3 Things You Can Fit into the 2023 Ford F-150 Lightning Frunk
Electric trucks still aren’t up to par with traditional internal combustion pickups in some regards—including towing, which greatly reduces driving range—but what these electrified workhorses lack in some areas, they can make up for in others. One prime example is the practicality offered by the Ford F-150 Lightning, which offers 14.1 cu-ft of storage space in its frunk, a full cubic foot more offered in the trunk of a new Toyota Corolla.
Here are some top uses for taking advantage of the Lightning’s spacious frunk.
Charge your tools and lock them away
Full-size pickups may serve as family haulers for many buyers, but at their heart, they are still meant to tackle a job site and be utilitarian workhorses. And that’s where the F-150 Lightning’s frunk pays dividends.
Inside the frunk are dual 120V outlets, allowing for the use of electric tools and equipment directly from the front of the pickup. Or, those outlets can be used to charge tool batteries or equipment when they’re not in use.
Better yet, the frunk is lockable, so there’s no need to worry about someone making their way off with the tools of your trade when you need to journey into the home improvement store for the 23rd time this week.
The Ford F-150’s frunk provides convenient storage on the go
The Lightning’s sizeable frunk also shines when you need to use the electrified pickup as a hauler of people while still needing to move cargo you don’t want to place in the bed.
Need to move a nightstand but forgot your tie-downs? Just throw it in the frunk. Is it pouring rain and you’d rather not have your new set of $2,000 golf clubs exposed to the weather? The frunk can handle it. Have a cab full of people you’re taking to the airport and don’t want to risk their luggage flying out onto the highway? The frunk will ease your worries. Is the bed full of stuff but you need to move just one more piece of equipment? The frunk is there to help.
The Lightning’s frunk provides enough space to haul any reasonably sized item without infringing on either bed or cabin space. It might not be necessary for everyday use, but it will certainly be appreciated when it’s needed.
The frunk is a mobile tailgate cooler
The Lightning’s frunk is wrapped in a water-resistant liner, and it includes a water-resistant drain plug. That is to say, the frunk can act as a mobile cooler that will take you tailgating instead of the other way around.
Its capacity of 14.1 cu-ft means you can pack a lot of ice and whatever you may need for a tailgate, even if what you only really want is a bunch of 12-ounce bottles or cans adorned with a government-mandated warning.
The true tailgate-savvy Lightning owner could even let the ice partially melt during the sporting event and throw their friend, who over imbibed, in the frunk’s icy waters to figuratively sober up before driving home (with a designated drive, of course).
That can lessen the risk of hearing dry heaving coming from the back seat that sounds suspiciously like “fruuuunk.”
Other 2023 Ford F-150 Lightning Highlights
The 2023 F-150 Lightning comes standard with dual electric motors and all-wheel drive, though buyers have a choice of battery sizes and power. The standard range model delivers 452 horsepower and up to 230 miles on a single charge while the extended range model packs 580 ponies and a range of 320 miles.
Both versions offer 775 pound-feet of torque with the standard model delivering a 7,700-pound towing capacity. Models with the larger battery can haul up to 10,000 pounds.
Inside, there’s not much difference between the Lightning and the traditional F-150, though the electrified version has shot up in price since its introduction. The base F-150 Lightning XLT now commands a $59,974 MSRP.
