Ford issues a do-not-drive order for over 765,000 vehicles
Ford makes some of the best new cars on the market. However, some of the automaker’s slightly older vehicles have been impacted by faulty Takata airbags. Of course, the automaker previously issued an airbag recall. Now, it’s moving forward with a do-not-drive order for the vehicles that owners have not taken in for repairs by auto mechanics at its various dealerships. This includes the 2014 Ford Mustang and various other vehicles.
Many people didn’t listen to the previous airbag recall
No one wants to spend time going to auto mechanics for an issue they assume may not be a problem. However, responding to a recall, especially one related to a faulty airbag, is one of the most important things you can do for safety. According to Ford, there’s a new do-not-drive order for about 765,600 vehicles. Of those, about 374,300 are in the United States.
As mentioned, the do-not-drive order comes after Ford issued an airbag recall in 2015 over issues with the inflators in several airbags produced by Takata. The automaker says there is a higher chance “the airbag will explode and expel sharp metal fragments during a crash” due to these vehicles being slightly older. Naturally, this could cause drivers and passengers to become seriously injured.
Ford says it has made about 121 million attempts to reach customers after the airbag recall. There have been phone calls, emails, and text messages sent to people who still need to comply with the recall. The automaker even says there have been 1 million canvassing visits to spread the word. The do-not-drive order is supposed to encourage drivers to get the issue fixed right away. Ford is even allowing mobile repairs. Additionally, the dealership can arrange to have the vehicles towed.
The vehicles with potential driverside airbag issues include the following:
- The 2004-2006 Ford Ranger
- The 2005-2014 Ford Mustang
- The 2005-2006 Ford GT
Passenger side airbags:
- The 2006-2012 Ford Fusion, Mercury Milan, Lincoln MKZ / Zephyr models
- 2007-2010 Ford Edge and Lincoln MKX vehicles
- 2007-2011 Ford Ranger trucks
