Keeping up with car maintenance is one of the most important parts of ownership. Naturally, taking your vehicle to auto mechanics for repairs and diagnostics is a significant aspect. However, there has been a long debate over transmission problems and having the unit serviced. Drivers have differing opinions, but most agree that servicing it isn’t always recommended. Now, watch a mechanic give his opinion as to why.

Auto mechanics say having a transmission serviced isn’t necessarily a way to fix problems

Transmission problems are among the worst things drivers can experience. Because of this, some may believe having the transmission serviced is a solution. However, as many auto mechanics have said, this may not be the case. According to Daily Dot, Chris Craig (@chris_mf_craig) recently took to TikTok to explain why this is the case and how it could cause other issues.

According to him, people who go to auto mechanics to have the transmission serviced usually do so because they’re experiencing problems. However, he recommends not having it done if it has not been serviced in 100,000 miles or more. In these cases, a transmission flush or other repair may be better.

As other auto mechanics have said, servicing a transmission meeting this criteria could worsen it. Gear slipping, vehicle jerking, etc., could increase.

The transmission service on a high mileage vehicle… here is a little of my 2 cents along with some technical information! #chrismfcraig #serviceadvisor #weowebetter #technician #dealershiplife

So, what does it mean when you have your transmission serviced? In a nutshell, this is preventative maintenance from auto mechanics where they flush the fluid and change the filter. Transmission flushes only involve changing the fluid. Many experts say automatic transmissions need service between 60,000 and 100,000 miles, and manual transmissions need service between 30,000 and 60,000 miles. However, this timeframe could vary.
