Owners should be mindful of many aspects of car care. Naturally, this includes taking their car to auto mechanics for scheduled maintenance or when there’s a mechanical issue. However, many people don’t consider that their vehicle could make them sick in various ways. These illnesses could come from a lack of proper car filters or cleaning.

Your car could be filled with germs

Keeping your car clean is a significant part of car care that doesn’t require the work of auto mechanics. However, this extends beyond just making it look good by vacuuming the seats or washing the exterior. Instead, it’s important to remember that, unless adequately sanitized, your car could be among the germiest parts of your life.

This is because, unlike homes, most people don’t wipe down surfaces in their cars. Additionally, spraying disinfectants is another part of car care many owners don’t see as important, but it is as long as you avoid using it on parts that can be damaged. Consider gas pumps. According to Commercial Zone, in a 2020 study, 71 percent of the fuel pumps tested were “highly contaminated” with illness-causing germs.

Because of this, you are bringing those germs into your vehicle, potentially risking your health. Of course, different factors impact how long germs last on surfaces. However, some can last for months, and new ones are constantly being introduced. This is one reason why disinfecting your vehicle is essential to car care.

Replacing filters is an important part of car care

Changing the various air filters is another vital part of car care. However, keeping up with the cabin air filter is essential to your health. This is because this car filter is responsible for keeping out harmful substances such as smoke and debris. Not doing so can be detrimental to the respiratory system. Naturally, it’s even worse for people with asthma and other breathing issues.

So, how often do you need a new cabin air filter? It’s generally accepted that it should be replaced every 15,000 miles. It’s important to note that this could require the help of auto mechanics, as the cabin air filter can be challenging to access.

Your car’s AC could pose a problem

Most people don’t think of their AC when they consider car care. This is the case unless the system doesn’t seem to get as cold as it once did. However, mold can accumulate in the AC system and then blow directly into your face. Mold growth can happen because of leaks, condensation, or humidity. To prevent it, vehicle owners should clean AC vents. Having the coils checked and cleaned is also important.
