A high number of car wrecks forced Dallas officials to lower speed limits on a popular expressway
Excessive speeding is a major problem in several parts of the country. Naturally, this means many people are pulled over for this reason. In fact, it’s one of the leading causes of fatal car wrecks each year, which means officials nationwide are pursuing action to combat this dangerous activity. Now, Dallas is taking similar steps as officials are reducing speed limits for increased safety.
Excessive speeding is among the biggest causes of car wrecks
According to NBC DFW, there has been a significant problem with people going at excessive rates of speed. Because of this, the City Council in Dallas recently voted to decrease the speed limits on some parts of the U.S. 75 Central Expressway. The council hopes this change will reduce the number of fatal car wrecks.
Currently, the speed limit from Mockingbird Lane to Woodall Rodges Freeway in Dallas is 70 miles per hour. After the change goes into effect, the new speed limit will be 65 miles per hour. Police officers can enforce it after the new speed limit signs are posted.
Last year, the news organization investigated the situation and uncovered some troubling statistics. In under five years, 18 people died on the freeway due to car wrecks caused by excessive speeding. The investigation also found that about 78 people were “seriously injured.” Notably, the number of people pulled over and cited for speeding fell 19 percent between 2019 and 2021. However, this is said to be due to a lack of staff.
The local NBC News channel also conducted a study on a random Monday this year between 8 p.m. and 11 p.m. and found that “at least a dozen vehicles traveling above 100 mph.” These speeds could easily cause car wrecks.
