Most drivers still use gas-powered vehicles, which means it’s common to need to refuel. However, one thing that’s frightening for many people is the idea that their bank accounts can be hacked at the gas pump. This happens to millions of people each year, so it’s not just a random worry. Luckily, there are a few things drivers can do to avoid having their information stolen by card skimmers and other means.

There are ways to avoid being hacked by card skimmers

With the rise of technology, it has become more accessible for people to hack your banking information at the gas pump. As mentioned, one of the most common ways people do this is using card skimmers. According to Time Magazine, a card skimmer is a device that looks like an actual point of sale. Some scammers will put the device over the merchant’s official point of sale. The device then copies and steals your card information.

Avoid card skimmers by paying inside the store

The scary thing about card skimmers is that they look so much like the actual payment device. Because of this, many experts say you should go into the store to pay for your gas. Of course, this may not always be possible, but it’s still the best course of action. It may make the process of refueling your vehicle take longer, but it could protect your information.

Use tap to pay

Nowadays, tap-to-pay has become much more common with the rise of chip cards. Luckily, many gas pumps now have this feature as well. The great thing is that using tap-to-pay makes your card and banking information less vulnerable to card skimmers. However, be aware that hackers can still steal your information in some ways, so going inside the store is still best.

Use pumps closer to the store

Another way to avoid card skimmers is to use the gas pumps closer to the store. Using pumps closer to the building is suitable because hackers are less likely to hack pumps that the store attendants can easily see. However, this may only sometimes work, especially at gas stations that close at some point instead of being 24-hour stores.

Of course, hackers have all sorts of ways to steal your information. However, you can make it more challenging for them in several ways. Some people also suggest using credit cards at the gas pump as they offer more protection than debit cards. If you do get hacked, contact your banking institution as soon as possible.
