U-Haul agrees to $5 million settlement over data breach
U-Haul is one of the most well-known moving truck companies. However, it also suffered a massive data breach a couple of years ago, leaving several customers’ information vulnerable. Now, the company has agreed to a settlement for the related class action suit. The individual victims won’t get much, but the company is expected to pay a substantial amount to impacted people who got trucks.
U-Haul has reached a settlement in its class action suit
U-Haul is one of the most widely used moving truck companies. However, the company has reached an agreement in its class action suit over the data breach it suffered. The report says that the company will pay $5 million to customers from California. Specifically, the settlement is for those whose information was compromised in either September 2022 or December of the following year.
According to the class action suit, hackers were able to access U-Haul’s private documents on these two separate occasions. This also means they got access to the impacted customers’ names and driver’s license numbers. As is usually the case, U-Haul is denying any wrongdoing but still plans to issue payouts to those whose information was stolen after getting a vehicle from the company to move.
As mentioned, the individual victims in the suit won’t get a lot of compensation, as payments are expected to be $100. However, this amount could change depending on how many people submit the proper paperwork. To qualify, customers will need to have been California residents either between November 5, 2021, and April 5, 2022, or around December 5, 2023. They should also have received a Notice of Recent Security Incident letter.
Customers have until October 15 to submit a claim to the official settlement website. The final hearing for the class action suit is scheduled for October 23. People have until September 16 to exclude themselves.
