The continuously variable transmission has been around for a while. Quite a few automakers use it, but it doesn’t have the best reputation among mechanics and vehicle owners alike. Of course, some people love CVT cars, but there are a few models that drivers who prefer used cars should think twice about. Among the worst are the used 2016 Nissan Altima, 2014 Infiniti QX60, and the Nissan Pathfinder of the same year.

Many used car buyers look for a Nissan Altima. Not only does it deliver solid performance, but modern versions like the 2016 Nissan Altima compete with many cars from automakers like Honda and Toyota. However, perhaps people should skip the 2016 Nissan Altima as this used model has some notable issues. 

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Association, this used Nissan Altima model has almost 500 complaints. Unfortunately, most of the issues aren’t minor, and its continuously variable transmission accounts for several reported complaints. Drivers report harsh gear shifts, shuddering, and premature transmission failure. This is one of the worst CVT cars. 

The 2014 Infiniti QX60 isn’t a good CVT car

Despite not being popular, some SUV buyers may elect a used Infiniti QX60. However, the 2014 2014 Infiniti QX60 is a model that they should think twice about. This isn’t due to there being better used luxury SUVs, but because this Infiniti QX60 is notorious for its less than stellar continuously variable transmission. 

Of course, premature transmission failure is an issue with the 2014 Infiniti QX60. However, the maintenance problems leading up to that can include grinding gears, harsh shifts, and slipping. This all makes for not only an unreliable experience but also an unpleasant one. Many owners suggest also skipping the 2015 and 2017 models for a used Infiniti QX60. 

The 2014 Nissan Pathfinder also isn’t perfect

A used Nissan Pathfinder can be a solid option for people who want a rugged SUV. It uses a continuously variable transmission, but many owners don’t have issues. However, the 2014 Nissan Pathfinder isn’t one of the best used options. In fact, people who own this used Nissan Pathfinder model say buyers should look at other options. 

The biggest issue with the 2014 Nissan Pathfinder has to do with its transmission. These problems include the usual suspects- the jerking and sundering, but it gets worse. Some owners have replaced the transmission, only to experience the same problems. Of course, this isn’t a cheap fix, and there are far better used Nissan Pathfinder models on the market. 

Overall, CVT cars aren’t inherently problematic. However, they can cause several issues for owners, and they are more costly to fix than regular automatics. Still, the continuously variable transmission has some upsides, which is why automakers like Nissan continue to use them.
