There are many things to consider when picking the best new or used cars. One of the most significant aspects is the engine. There are many options, but those looking for something powerful but not too inefficient often go for a vehicle with a six-cylinder engine. There are other options, but this usually means you get a V6 or an inline-6 engine, which people also call a straight-6. Some might think they are the same, but there are differences between the two. Both are less popular than the four-cylinder engine.

How is an inline-6 engine different from a V6?

The main differences between a straight-6 engine and a V6 are complexity and overall layout. With an inline-6 engine, all six cylinders are in a straight line, which also makes it the less complex of the two options. With a V6 engine, the cylinders are arranged in two rows of three to form a V shape. 

Regarding size, the V6 is the more compact of the two, which allows it to fit into some smaller cars than an inline-6 can power. However, the prolonged cost of the two is a bit of a toss-up. The V6 engine is the more efficient of the two, but the straight-6 is usually easier to maintain. Additionally, the inline-6 engine allows for a smoother ride than the V6, as the cylinders are more well-balanced. Cars with a V6 tend to vibrate more than their counterparts. 

Naturally, both options have drawbacks when compared to four-cylinder engines. One of the most important factors for buyers is that six-cylinder engines use more fuel than their smaller counterparts. There’s also the matter of upfront costs, as six-cylinder engines are more expensive than vehicles with smaller engines. Naturally, this makes most cars with V6 and inline-6 engines more costly. 

The V6 engine is more common

According to CJ Pony Parts, the V6 engine is the more common of the two six-cylinder options. In fact, some of the best new cars come equipped with a V6 simply because they are smaller and use less fuel than their counterparts. However, the four-cylinder is much more common. As of October 2023, the smaller engine made up 57.2% of the market share, while the six-cylinder made up 26.8%. 

Like the V8 engine, six-cylinder engines are becoming less common as time goes on. This comes as automakers find ways to make vehicles more efficient for drivers and the planet’s health. However, they are still a top choice for full-size SUVs and pickup trucks.
