Is Range Anxiety a Thing of the Past for EV Drivers?
The car buying public is a bit divided on the use of EVs. While many believe them to be the future, some are iffy. In many cases, the doubters believe they are merely a niche in the automotive world. Unfortunately, there is still great concern over the distance electric cars can go, which is also called range anxiety. However, this may be coming to an end as the majority of new all-electric cars have ranges similar to ICE vehicles.
There is less of a reason to worry about the distance electric cars can travel
Range anxiety may be close to becoming a thing of the past for all-electric cars. According to the Vehicle Technologies Office, there were 19 light-duty EVs with a range of at least 300 miles on the market for 2023. These came from 11 different automakers. This is a substantial increase as 14 models in 2022 achieved this feat and only five in 2021.
Of course, the worry over the distance electric cars can go will continue to decrease. So far, 2024 has seen the announcements of many brand new models that can go 300 or more miles on a single charge. For example, Cadillac recently announced the Optiq. This is a compact SUV that will arrive for the 2025 model year. There’s also the Jeep Wagoneer S and the Chevrolet Equinox EV.
This milestone for the distance electric cars can go is still lower than what the average gas powered car can achieve. However, it’s important to point out that there are outliers. For example, the Polestar 2 can go 406 miles on a single charge, and the Mercedes EQS can go about 452. Perhaps more people will be willing to give EVs a chance with their increased range. However, it’ll be a while before EV sales are equal to gas powered options.
