There has been a subtle push for a while to have a digital version of the state-issued ID. Some states have developed dedicated applications for IDs and driver’s licenses, while others support the use of Apple and Android apps. Florida was one of those states that had an app for its ID card. However, the Sunshine State seems to have changed its mind about how drivers identify themselves.

Here’s the situation.

Florida residents will have to use their physical ID card for the time being

Florida started allowing residents to use a digital version of their ID card in 2022. At the time, it was one of only a few states to support the use of this technology. However, that move seems to be on pause for now. According to Tom’s Guide, The Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles notified people who used the digital state-issued ID and told them to delete the app.

The department is apparently looking for a new company to create and operate a new application for the program digital Florida ID card. It’s unclear why this change is happening. The department has also said that residents must return to using their physical state-issued ID. This could be stressful for people with cars because they may have gotten into the habit of only using their digital driver’s license.

The Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles has also taken the step of removing the application from various app stores. While it is unclear why officials in Florida felt the need to stop supporting the digital ID card, the notification to residents stated that they wanted to improve certain features. They also informed residents that they hope to have a new application up and running by early 2025.
