The Ford Mustang Mach-E has gained quite a bit of ground when it comes to sales, and many call it one of the best all-electric SUVs. Still, it gets flack for bearing the name of one of the most iconic muscle cars of all time. Now, it has a new bragging right as hypermilers recently used one to break a record for production EVs.
The Ford Mustang Mach-E is among the best all-electric SUVs
According to Road & Track, a group of hypermilers in England have just used a Ford Mustang Mach-E to break a record. They took what some call one of the best all-electric SUVs on a lengthy 569-mile trip. However, the kicker is that they did it in a single charge, which would be impossible without using hypermiling.
The all-electric Mustang that the drivers used operated on a 91 kWh extended-range battery as well as a rear-mounted motor. Their trip equates to about 6.25 miles per kilowatt hour. However, this configuration for the all-electric Mustang should only get about 320 miles on a charge, which means their trip is 78 percent longer than what the actual range of the car allows. The Guinness Book of World Records has now recognized the drivers, Kevin Booker and Sam Clark, for the feat.
As noted, this record with the Ford Mustang Mach-E is for production electric vehicles. The fastest model, in general, is the Mercedes EQXX, which went 747 miles on a single charge in 2022.
So, what is hypermiling? It’s a group of techniques drivers employ to use less gas or, in this case, make the battery last as long as possible. They often do this by avoiding excessive braking and acceleration.
