Why is the fuel cap becoming so rare?
While it may seem new to many, the idea of vehicles without a fuel cap isn’t all that recent. Ford announced plans in 2006 to eliminate the device. The automaker started this process in 2008, and by 2009, the Ford Explorer and other successful nameplates had moved to capless fuel tanks. Since then, many of the best new cars have followed suit. So, why did Ford and other automakers move away from the fuel cap? For starters, they see it as being more convenient for drivers. Naturally, having a capless fuel tank allows drivers to get gas much quicker as they don’t have to unscrew the device. According to MotoRad, capless tanks also release fewer emissions while refueling.
Another advantage to cars not having a fuel cap is that it’s harder for thieves to steal gas. This is the case because gas tanks without caps have mechanisms that make it practically impossible to use hoses to siphon gas. Of course, one of the clear advantages is that drivers don’t have to worry about getting fuel on their hands at gas station pumps.
There are also disadvantages to the best new cars not having caps
Of course, there are clear advantages to not having a fuel cap on your car. However, there are also a few drawbacks. Luckily, these issues don’t usually pose real problems for drivers, but they can in some situations.
For starters, one of the significant advantages can be a problem in emergencies. Yes, capless fuel systems make it harder for thieves to steal your gas. However, there could be times when you might need to siphon fuel from your car. Sadly, you can’t do this without a particular funnel.
Some drivers without traditional caps may also notice a more pungent gasoline smell when refueling. However, this isn’t a widely reported issue. However, there are cases where this more intense odor could cause side effects such as headaches.
