The Hummer was once viewed as the poster child for automotive excess for its extremely large footprint and exorbitant thirst for gasoline. However, the GMC Hummer EV marks a new era for the nameplate. It’s still a study in automotive overindulgence with eyebrow-raising power, unique features like its “crab walk” ability, a base price nearing six figures, and its massive dimensions, but its operation is far more environmentally friendly with its EV powertrain. But is anyone actually buying the electric behemoth? Let’s look at the GMC Hummer EV sales numbers.

GMC Hummer EV sales have resumed, but its appeal remains niche

Hummer EV production went on hiatus late in 2022 and early into 2023 as GM prepared to roll out the Chevrolet Silverado EV and GMC Sierra EV, undoubtedly impacting sales figures and delivery. Production has since resumed on the heavyweight all-electric, but don’t expect to see too many on the road.

According to GoodCarBadCar, 389 Hummer EVs were sold in September, nearly double the monthly sales of 2022, and 1,232 units have been sold in 2023, a 58 percent increase over this time last year. While GMC Hummer EV sales are on the rise, its figures underscore its niche appeal.

Many of the models the Hummer EV has outsold this year have either just been introduced, including the Alfa Romeo Tonale, or are on their way to the figurative scrapyard in the sky, like the Jaguar F-Type and Toyota C-HR. Still, GMC can take some solace in the Hummer EV keeping pace with the sales of — or slightly outselling — some other niche models like the BMW XM, Lexus RC, Genesis G90, and Audi Q8 Sportback e-tron.

Still, it’s safe to assume the Hummer EV will ever reach the popularity of the original model with its H2 and H3 variants. Yet, it should still strike a chord with those seeking a bulky and highly capable traverser of all terrains that happens to be powered exclusively by electricity.

The Hummer EV’s specs are eye-popping all around

The GMC Hummer EV was introduced in 2021 exclusively as a pickup, but now the model is also being offered as a five-passenger SUV. No matter the body style choice, the Hummer EV is rich with specs about as sizable as its actual footprint.

The 2023 pickup model is available in three trims, all powered by a tri-motor setup (two electric motors in the rear and one in front) delivering 1,000 hp and a ridiculous 11,500 lb.-ft. of torque. To boot, the Hummer EV Pickup has a driving range of 329-355 miles on a single charge and can haul up to 8,500 pounds. The new range-topping 3X trim is estimated to zip from 0-60 mph in just three seconds with an optional 24-module battery. GMC says the standard 20-module battery can accomplish the feat in 3.5 seconds. That’s especially impressive given the pickup version weighs in at more than 9,000 pounds, a simply astounding figure.  

The same tri-motor setup powers the SUV version with its power output at 830 hp and its weight slightly less at about 8,600 pounds. GMC estimates the Hummer EV SUV, which is available in two trims with variations, can travel 298 to 314 miles on a single charge, even with 35-inch all-terrain tires.

The pickup model features torque-vectoring all-wheel drive, DC fast charging ability up to 350-kW, a trailer brake controller, GMC’s MultiPro tailgate, a trailer hitch and trailer brake controller, and removable glass roof panels as standard. The Hummer EV also has a four-wheel steering system with a “CrabWalk” feature, and full underbody protection and other all-terrain kit is available.

Pricing for the 2024 Hummer EV Pickup starts at $98,845, with the 3X model commanding $106,945. The 2024 Hummer EV SUV starts at $79,995, with the 3X topping the range at $106,945.

With its price, capabilities, and overall size, the Hummer EV Pickup and SUV are unlikely to top many sales charts, but the latest figures show the model still has its appeal among a smaller subset of buyers.
