Albuquerque Just Filed a Lawsuit Against Kia and Hyundai
Many of the best new cars on the market come from Hyundai and Kia. This is especially the case with the Kia Telluride and the Hyundai Palisade. However, there is a new lawsuit against Kia and Hyundai stemming from the infamous “Kia Boyz” stealing slightly older models of cars made by both automakers. Unfortunately, many owners have been impacted by the theft.
There’s a new lawsuit against Kia and Hyundai
According to KRQE News, the City of Albuquerque has just filed a new lawsuit against Kia and Hyundai. The lawsuit is due to both automakers failing to install security features to help prevent theft. According to the lawsuit, the automakers made the omission in order to cut costs in some of its vehicles made between 2011 and 2021.
In particular, Kia and Hyundai models from 2011 until 2021 don’t have immobilizers. Car immobilizers are security features that prevent anyone from starting the vehicle if they don’t have the right key. For this reason, bad actors like the “Kia Boyz” have had such an easy time stealing these vehicles. Of course, many thieves tamper with the ignition in order to steal these Kia and Hyundai models.
Car immobilizers also prevent car theft because they disable the fuel system. These devices have been around for quite a while, and many automakers started using them in the mid-1990s. This long history makes it odd that Kia and Hyundai decided not to use them, prompting several lawsuits.
Regarding the Kia and Hyundai lawsuit, a law enforcement representative from Albuquerque recently had this to say, “A stolen motor vehicle doesn’t just impact the victim whose car was stolen. Time and time again have seen in this city, stolen motor vehicles kill innocent drivers who are driving down the roadways in which these individuals are either fleeing other crimes or fleeing law enforcement in that stolen motor vehicle.”
Of course, the City of Albuquerque isn’t the only area that has a lawsuit against Kia and Hyundai. Other cities that have taken the same action are Seattle, Cleveland, and St. Louis.
