One of the great things about modern vehicles is that they include numerous safety and security features. Of course, most people consider things like lane departure warnings. However, there are several ways our cars can provide a degree of security. One less discussed feature is limp mode, which can come in handy for many drivers.

What is limp mode in a car?

Limp mode is one of those features that most people don’t know their cars have. According to J.D. Power, it’s a security feature that not only reduces speed but turns off various nonessential functions.D Drivers also typically can’t get beyond second gear. The purpose of this mode in a car is to prevent engine damage from overuse when the system detects some major fault or defect.

This security feature can be activated for several reasons. It could be because it detects issues with the transmission, wiring, sensor defects, low fluid levels, various engine problems, etc. Essentially, limp mode, also commonly called limp home mode, is supposed to allow a driver to travel home or to a mechanic’s shop to figure out the issue. Naturally, drivers shouldn’t ignore the change in performance as it could signal significant problems with their cars.

How to exit the protective mode

Many people may wonder if their car has limp home mode. This is a fair question since it’s a rarely discussed feature in the mainstream automotive world. According to Kelley Blue Book, just about every modern vehicle has some form of the mode. However, exactly how it works might differ from model to model. Still, the result will be the same, as the car is protecting itself from significant damage.

Car owners may also wonder how to exit limp mode. As mentioned, drivers should get the vehicle checked out to ensure there isn’t a problem. However, there is always a minor chance the car entering the protective mode could have been a glitch. First, drivers should safely pull over. They can then reset the car by turning it off for 30 seconds. If it drives like normal, it may have been a malfunction, or it could have been a temporary issue.

There’s a decently negative discourse surrounding limp mode in some online forums. However, this valuable safety feature could help detect issues before they become major. Additionally, it provides a safe way to travel a short distance home if something goes wrong.
