Ultimately, it’s generally accepted that used car buyers skip the 2016 Honda Pilot but maybe go for the 2018 model.
2016 is not the best year for a used Honda Pilot
The Honda Pilot may be one of the best used midsize SUVs, but the 2016 model isn’t reliable. This is the case because it has over 1,000 complaints by owners on CarComplaints. Unfortunately, the most complained about aspect of the Honda SUV has to do with the all-important transmission. For the most part, these problems come in the form of the SUV jerking and shuddering when accelerating.
There have also been reports of the engine in the 2016 Honda Pilot dying while driving. Some Pilots that suffer from this have sensor issues, while others have defective camshafts, which is an expensive fix. Additionally, this model has several other issues with sensors. Despite this not being the best used Pilot, some owners have a worry-free experience with it.

The 2018 Pilot is one of the best midsize SUVs
The 2018 Honda Pilot lives up to the automaker’s reputation for reliability. J.D. Power gave it an 82 out of 100, which the marketing research firm considers ‘great.’ Overall, this model has an 82, whereas the 2016 version only has a 74, which is only ‘average.’ However, buyers should note that this score is also reflective of some of the previous models. The 2017 model is also solid.
Regarding performance, the 2018 Pilot has a 3.5-liter V6 engine with a maximum output of 280 horsepower and a torque of 262 lb-ft. It has front and all-wheel drive configurations and uses a six-speed automatic transmission. The 2018 Pilot accelerates from 0 to 60 miles per hour in under seven seconds; 2WD models can tow up to 3,500 pounds, whereas AWD models can carry 5,000 pounds.
The base trim of the Honda 2018 Pilot has a five-inch infotainment screen, whereas higher trims have an eight-inch. This model also has multiple USB ports and supports Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. It also excels when it comes to cargo storage, as it can accommodate up to 83.9 cubic feet. Overall, this used Pilot model is much better than the 2016 model. Also, consider the 2017-2020 models.
