Mods for cars are fairly popular. These enhancements can be simple, such as changing out the floor mats. Still, many people go to auto mechanics for mechanical vehicle upgrades. However, Florida drivers could face new fees for car modifications that make too much noise. In fact, the costs are pretty hefty.

Some mods for cars impact other people

According to WFLA, the Southwest Florida Noise Task Force has plans to limit noise pollution caused by some mods for cars in Collier County. In particular, the plans will target the car medications of the muffler. Burt Saunders, the Collier County Commissioner, had this to say, “Law enforcement is going to go after both the driver of the modified muffler vehicle as well as the company, the entity that’s modifying the definition.”

The previously mentioned task force says there has been an increase in noise complaints caused by these car modifications. Because of this, officials will conduct inspections at local auto mechanics’ shops to ensure they’re not behind these noisy mods for cars. Apparently, letters have already been sent to auto shops to inform them of the change.

One supporter of the changes regarding car modifications for mufflers said, “Noise pollution is the new secondhand smoke. Noise pollution is detrimental to mental and physical health.” A local mechanic also said, “They do it mostly for the noise. You want to be seen. You want to be heard. It makes your car sound faster, and it’s an attention grabber.”

The fines for these car modifications are $313 for the first offense and $613 for the second and subsequent offenses. It’s important to note that making changes to the exhaust system that cause excessive noise was already illegal. However, the task force is simply trying to ensure people adhere to the rules. For more reading, check out our article on signs your muffler may be going bad.
